Tropical Queen Butterfly
Found a few caterpillars in my garden.. so I decided to bring them in a safe habitat and here they are.
My first time having a habitat I saved 67 butterflies. I found that many in my garden because I actually watched a monarch butterfly lay their eggs.
Now everytime I walk out in the front I check on the milk weeds to see if find eggs or caterpillars to save.. I saved about 6 grown caterpillars and within a couple of days they transition into their chrysalis.. so we are patiently waiting for them to hatch
While setting that habit up for the caterpillars I found some eggs so I placed them in the habitat and a few so far have hatch from the eggs.
Seeing those first few caterpillars in my garden sparked something truly special in me! It's been such a rewarding journey to create a safe haven for Monarch butterflies right at home. If you're inspired to do the same, let me share a bit more about how I set up my butterfly habitat and cared for these incredible creatures. First, for the habitat itself, you don't need anything super fancy. I started with a pop-up mesh laundry hamper – it’s breathable and collapsible! You can also find dedicated butterfly enclosures online or at garden stores. The key is good ventilation to prevent mold and ensure fresh air for your growing caterpillars. I line the bottom with paper towels for easy cleanup, which is crucial for hygiene. Keeping the habitat clean is probably one of the most important things you can do to keep your caterpillars healthy. I change the paper towels daily, especially as they grow and produce more frass (caterpillar poop). Finding the eggs and caterpillars is half the fun! I regularly check the underside of milkweed leaves in my garden. Monarchs exclusively lay their eggs on milkweed, so it's their lifeline. The eggs are tiny, ridged, and usually yellow-white. Caterpillars are much easier to spot with their distinctive black, yellow, and white stripes. When I find them, I carefully snip the leaf they’re on (or a small piece of stem) and place it gently into my habitat. Avoid touching the tiny eggs or caterpillars directly if possible, as they’re very fragile. Once they're in the habitat, feeding is simple: fresh milkweed, daily! I collect new leaves each morning and gently rinse them before placing them in a small, water-filled floral tube or a small bottle. This keeps the leaves fresh longer. Make sure the water source is covered so tiny caterpillars don't accidentally fall in and drown. They eat a lot, so be prepared to replenish their food continuously. It’s amazing to watch how quickly these little guys grow into plump, ready-to-pupate caterpillars – they truly are eating machines! The chrysalis stage is truly magical. When a caterpillar is ready, it will often wander a bit and then attach itself to the top or side of the enclosure, hanging in a 'J' shape. This is the moment to be patient! Within a day or so, they'll shed their skin one last time and transform into a beautiful jade-green chrysalis with metallic gold dots. It's important not to disturb them during this time. I make sure my habitat is in a safe spot, away from direct sunlight and drafts. After about 10-14 days, the chrysalis will start to darken, and you might even see the distinct orange and black wing patterns through the translucent casing. This means a butterfly is about to emerge! Once they hatch, I let them hang and fully dry their wings for a few hours (usually 3-4) before releasing them. Seeing them take their first flight is an incredibly joyful moment. I like to release them on a sunny day when there are plenty of nectar flowers in my garden or nearby. It’s truly a hands-on way to contribute to the conservation of these magnificent Butterflies. Starting your own Monarch habitat is not just a project; it's an experience that connects you with nature and teaches you so much about life cycles.
