Hey everyone! If you're here, you're probably just as excited as I am about making beautiful, handmade graduation leis. There's something truly special about crafting a personalized gift for someone's big day, and ribbon leis are not only stunning but also a wonderful keepsake. I've been making these for years, and I promise, once you get the hang of it, you'll be hooked! Let's dive a bit deeper into what you'll need and some pro tips I've learned along the way. First, gather your materials. You'll typically want two different colors of satin ribbon – I find 7/8 inch or 1.5-inch width works best for a substantial lei. The OCR mentioned 8 yards of each ribbon, and that's a great starting point for a standard adult-sized lei. You'll also need a good pair of sharp scissors, a ruler or measuring tape, and crucially, two paper clips. These little guys are going to be your best friends for keeping everything in place. Now for the weaving! The basic technique involves creating loops and threading them through each other. When you start, make sure to leave a tail of about 6-8 inches on each ribbon, as you'll use these to tie off your lei at the end. I usually secure my starting point with a paper clip to prevent unraveling. The core of the design is creating a white loop inside the purple loop (or whatever two colors you choose!) and then alternating. You'll make a loop with one color, then thread the other color's loop through it, and then pull to tighten gently. This is how you achieve that beautiful checkered look that makes these leis so distinctive. It can feel a bit tricky at first to keep the tension even, but practice makes perfect! Don't be afraid to pull the ribbons snug, but not so tight that they pucker. The OCR mentioned making a 2nd loop – this refers to continuing the pattern, always alternating and ensuring your loops are uniform in size. As you go, you'll want to use your paper clips to hold the lei in place periodically, especially if you need to take a break or adjust your grip. This prevents your hard work from coming undone! Want to take your lei-making to the next level? While a two-ribbon lei is classic, you can experiment with 3 or even 4 ribbons for a fuller, more intricate design. Just remember to adjust your ribbon lengths accordingly. And for those looking to create a "money lei," you can carefully fold dollar bills into small fans or shapes and tuck them into the ribbon loops as you weave, or attach them after the lei is completed. Candy can also be added in a similar fashion for a fun twist! When you're happy with the length – often around 36-40 inches for a comfortable fit around the neck – it's time to finish. Carefully remove your paper clips and use the starting and ending tails of ribbon to tie a secure knot. You can then trim any excess and even add a decorative bow. Making these leis is such a rewarding craft, and seeing the joy on a graduate's face when they receive a handmade lei is truly priceless. Happy crafting!
