... Read moreThat cry, 'Lord, I believe; help my unbelief!' – it resonates so deeply with me, and I bet it does with many of you too. The story in Mark 9:17-23 isn't just an ancient tale; it's a mirror reflecting our own human struggles. I remember a time when everything just felt… heavy. It wasn't that I didn't want to believe, but the certainties I once held felt distant, almost muted, much like that 'mute spirit' described in the passage. We often think faith is this unwavering, rock-solid thing, but the truth is, it's often a wrestling match. Just like the father who brought his son, convulsing and foaming at the mouth, to Jesus, we come with our own spiritual ailments. Sometimes, our doubts make us feel rigid, unable to move forward, gnashing our teeth in frustration. It's in those moments, when our faith feels weak and we question if God can truly 'do anything,' that we need to remember this story. Jesus didn't condemn the father for his partial faith. He didn't say, 'Come back when you're 100% sure.' Instead, He met him right where he was, with compassion. 'If you can believe, all things are possible to him who believes,' Jesus said. And that's the powerful truth I cling to: it's not about perfect belief, but about bringing our imperfect belief to God and asking for help. My own journey has taught me that asking for help with unbelief isn't a sign of weakness; it's a profound act of faith in itself. It’s acknowledging that we're finite and need divine intervention. When I feel that spirit convulsing within me, threatening to throw me down into the 'fire and into to destroy' my hope, I try to recall the image of that father. He didn't give up. He cried out. So, what does 'Lord, help my unbelief' look like in everyday life? For me, it means continuing to show up in prayer, even when the words feel hollow. It means leaning into my community when I feel like a 'faithless generation' struggling alone. It means immersing myself in scripture, letting the timeless truths slowly chip away at my doubts. It’s about trusting that even a mustard seed of faith can move mountains, and that God honors our raw, honest cries for help. It’s a lifelong journey of believing and asking for more belief, day by day.
