Growing Our Own Food!

2025/2/23 Edited to

... Read moreBeyond just assembling my tower garden, I've been so excited about the possibilities this hydroponic system offers. For me, it's all about fresh, accessible food right at home, taking a step towards greater sustainability, and making the most of vertical space. I mean, who wouldn't want to pick fresh basil or crisp lettuce just steps away, no matter how small their living area is? One of the biggest questions I had, and I'm sure many of you do too, is what can you actually grow and how much? While I've started with essentials like arugula, bib lettuce, basil, gourmet lettuce, kale, rainbow chard, cilantro, and onion – mostly leafy greens and herbs – the beauty of a hydroponic tower is its incredible versatility. I've seen others successfully grow a wide range of produce, from juicy cherry tomatoes and crunchy cucumbers to sweet strawberries! Imagine the yield per plant with optimal conditions – a continuous harvest of your favorites, providing fresh ingredients year-round. Choosing the right seeds is crucial, and I made sure to pick out quality NON-GMO SEEDS for my initial setup. This ensures we're starting with the best foundation for healthy plants. After soaking the pods and carefully placing the seeds as shown in my first post, the next step is patience and consistent care. I'm learning that monitoring water levels and nutrient solutions will be key. My plan is to regularly check the pH and ensure the plants are getting everything they need to thrive, especially as they move from seedling trays into the TOWER itself. For anyone considering their own food growing tower, I'd say dive in! It might seem daunting at first, especially with the assembly, but seeing those tiny sprouts emerge after just a few days, like my 4 and 6-day progress, is incredibly rewarding. It's a fantastic way to utilize vertical space, even in a small apartment, to produce a significant amount of food. This method offers a higher yield in a smaller footprint compared to traditional gardening, making it ideal for urban dwellers or anyone looking to maximize their growing potential. It's not just about the volume of produce, though that's a huge plus for reducing grocery bills. It's also about knowing exactly where your food comes from, avoiding pesticides, and reducing your carbon footprint. This whole process, from selecting the right TOWER to watching the first true leaves unfurl, is a truly enriching experience. I'm already dreaming of fresh salads and homegrown herbs for all my cooking. What are your favorite things to grow in a vertical garden, or what would you love to try?

As our food quality goes down your knowledge needs to grow. It is very possible to grow a good portion of your veggies and fruit even in a small space! But it takes time to learn your climate and build up good soil. So the best time to start was ten yrs ago. The second best time is NOW. #growyo
