Sunbathing Bernese Mountain
Daphne Dog
You know, seeing my Bernese Mountain Dog, Daphne, stretched out enjoying her sun bath always makes me wonder about other activities. One question I get asked a lot is, 'Do Bernese Mountain Dogs like water?' It’s a great question, especially since they have such thick coats! From my experience and what I've learned from other Berner parents, the answer isn't a simple yes or no – it really depends on the individual dog. Generally, Bernese Mountain Dogs aren't naturally drawn to water like a Labrador Retriever might be. They weren't specifically bred for water retrieval tasks. However, many Berners do enjoy a good splash, especially on a hot day. Their dense double coat, while fantastic for keeping them warm in cold climates, can be quite heavy and cumbersome when wet. This means they can tire out faster in water, and drying them thoroughly takes time and effort to prevent skin issues. When we first introduced Daphne to water, we started really slow. We found that positive reinforcement is key. Instead of throwing her into a lake, we let her explore shallow puddles and streams at her own pace. A kiddie pool in the backyard with some floating toys can also be a fantastic way to gauge their interest. Some Berners love to just wade and splash around, while others might develop a real love for swimming. It’s all about making it a fun, stress-free experience. Safety is always my top priority. If your Bernese is going to be in deeper water, a properly fitted dog life vest is a must, even if they seem to be strong swimmers. Their heavy build can make swimming more strenuous for them. Always supervise them closely, especially in lakes or rivers where currents can be unpredictable. And remember to always provide access to fresh drinking water, even if they’re playing in a pool, to prevent them from drinking potentially unsafe water. After a water adventure, proper drying is crucial, as I mentioned. That thick Berner coat can hold a lot of moisture, leading to hot spots or skin irritation if not dried completely. I usually towel-dry Daphne as much as possible, then let her air dry in a warm, sunny spot – sometimes she even gets another sun bath to finish the job! It’s all part of keeping your beloved Bernese, your 'Bernie dog', happy and healthy. So, while not all Bernese Mountain Dogs will be avid swimmers, many can learn to enjoy water activities with the right introduction and precautions. It’s about discovering what your unique Bernesemount dog prefers, whether it’s a full swim or just a playful splash. Watching them discover new joys is truly one of the best parts of being a dog parent!
