For example, plants like Snake plants and ZZ plants are often called "unkillable," but this just means they show stress very slowly. By the time you notice symptoms, root rot might have been happening unseen for weeks. It’s a tough lesson that taught me to check my plants regularly rather than relying on how they look. Lighting is another common misconception. Many plants labeled as "low light" don’t thrive in dark, gloomy corners—they survive. They still need some indirect sunlight to actually grow and stay healthy. Moving a plant closer to a window or under a grow light made a big difference in my indoor garden. Watering is where many of us unknowingly cause harm. "Water once a week" advice doesn’t always apply because every home environment is different. I learned to feel the soil before watering, letting it dry out completely for some plants like succulents to avoid overwatering, which is the number one cause of death. Also, I realized that pots without drainage holes are a silent killer. Water pools at the bottom and roots suffocate and rot. Investing in pots with good drainage and using airy, fast-draining soil mixes helped my plants breathe and thrive better. Lastly, don’t forget to inspect underneath the leaves. Pests often hide out of sight on the undersides, which isn't obvious if you only look at the top surfaces. Flipping leaves weekly and wiping them clean helped me catch infestations early before they spread. To stay organized, I started using plant care apps, which remind me when to water or fertilize and help me track the health and needs of each plant. This small habit improved my success rate significantly. In summary, "beginner-friendly" doesn’t mean maintenance-free. Paying attention to these details and adapting based on your own environment makes all the difference in keeping indoor plants happy and healthy.
