How to cut Leeks

It’s peak leek season where I live, so I thought I’d show you how I cut and clean a leek. Did you know leeks are closely related to onions and garlic, but have a more mellow, slightly sweet flavor?

One thing you don’t want to skip is washing them well. Leeks can trap tiny grains of sand between their layers, so I like to wash them before slicing and then give them another rinse after to make sure everything’s clean.

What’s your favorite way to enjoy leeks?

... Read moreLeeks are a wonderfully versatile vegetable that can add a mild onion-garlic flavor to many dishes, but properly preparing them is key to enjoy their full potential. When I first started cooking with leeks, I often found grit and sand hiding deep within their layers, which really affected the texture of my meals. To avoid this, I developed a simple washing technique that works every time. After trimming the tough root end and the dark green tops, I slice the leek lengthwise to open up the layers. Then I run cold water through the layers while gently fanning them apart with my fingers. This helps release any trapped dirt or sand. Sometimes I even soak the cut leeks briefly in a bowl of cold water, stirring occasionally, then lift them out with a slotted spoon to prevent re-depositing the dirt. Rinsing twice ensures they’re clean and ready for cooking. When it comes to cutting, I prefer slicing my leeks into thin rounds, which cook quickly and evenly, perfect for soups, stir-fries, or sautés. However, for heartier recipes, chunkier cuts work well. Plus, instead of discarding the tough green tops, I often save them to make a flavorful vegetable stock, reducing food waste. One of my favorite recipes to showcase cleaned leeks is a creamy potato leek soup, which is comforting and simple. You can find many great recipes online, but the key is always the proper cleaning process to avoid any unexpected grit. Overall, taking the time to clean and cut leeks properly not only improves your dish but also enhances your cooking experience. Do you have any special tips or favorite recipes for leeks? I’d love to hear how you make the most out of this humble but tasty vegetable.
