Don’t say these things to anyone in Crisis

What you say to someone in a mental health crisis can either help or hurt more than you realize.

Try not to minimize their pain, rush to fix the problem, or respond with quick spiritual answers.

Sometimes the most helpful thing you can do is simply listen and let them feel heard.

Presence, patience, and compassion often mean more than the perfect words. #mentalhealth #mentalhealthawareness #firstaid #viral #fyp

... Read moreWhen someone opens up about their depression or mental health struggles, it can feel challenging to respond in the “right” way. From personal experience, I’ve found that avoiding certain phrases can prevent unintended harm and foster a supportive environment. For instance, saying “Others have it worse” may come from a good place, but it often minimizes their feelings and makes them feel unheard. Pain is not a competition, and each person’s suffering is valid. Instead of trying to “fix” the problem immediately or urge them to “just be strong,” it’s far more beneficial to offer your calm presence and compassion. Real strength often involves vulnerability and asking for help. I once learned this when supporting a close friend in crisis — simply asking, “Do you feel safe right now?” showed me the importance of being curious and genuinely attentive rather than giving quick spiritual or surface-level solutions. Another common but unhelpful comment is, “You don't look depressed.” Depression doesn’t have a uniform symptom presentation, so appearances can be deceiving. What matters most is making the person feel safe to share and reassuring them that you are there to listen without judgment. Mental Health First Aid isn’t about having a professional license; it’s about posture and presence, being calm, compassionate, and patient. These qualities can interrupt feelings of hopelessness and open pathways toward healing. Keeping these tips in mind can prepare us all to better support loved ones in crisis and create a safer space for difficult conversations.
