Haunted Train Tunnel?
We went to explore the infamous Moonville Tunnell in Zalinski State Forest. Located deep in the back country of Athens, Ohio this train tunnel once heavily used for transporting goods and materials is now being frequented by hikers and horror lovers alike.
4 friends and I braved the 1 mile in and 1 mile back out trail so you didn’t have to!
Above you can see the Tunnel and the graffiti I thought was most unique.

Don’t forget to come along with my while I explore Ohio. Moonville Tunnel
Exploring the Moonville Tunnel offers a unique blend of adventure, history, and a touch of the paranormal. This train tunnel, nestled deep within Athens, Ohio's backcountry, was once a bustling passageway for freight trains. Today, it draws not only hikers but also enthusiasts of haunted places due to its spooky reputation. During my exploration, the mile-long trail was both challenging and rewarding, leading to captivating graffiti that encapsulates the spirit of urban explorers and artists who have marked this historic site. The graffiti I encountered wasn't just random tagging; some of it seemed to reflect personal memories and emotions, adding an unexpected artistic dimension to the otherwise eerie tunnel. Moonville Tunnel's haunting stories stem from its history—a place where accidents and mysterious incidents have fueled legends about ghostly apparitions. Visitors often report an unsettling feeling or strange sounds, heightening the thrill of the exploration. If you’re someone who appreciates a good ghost story mixed with nature and history, this site will likely leave a lasting impression. For those planning to visit, remember it’s best to prepare for a two-mile round trip hike, with appropriate footwear and flashlights, especially if you intend to go inside the tunnel where light is limited. The surrounding forest and tranquil environment also make it an ideal spot for photography and reflection on Ohio’s rich railroading heritage. Overall, Moonville Tunnel is more than just a 'haunted train tunnel'; it’s a place of layered narratives—from railroad history to local art expressions and eerie folklore, making it a compelling destination for adventurers. Whether you’re a history buff, a hiker, or a paranormal fan, the Moonville Tunnel experience offers something that resonates on many levels.
