My Sketchbook

I’m the kind of person to just draw & color on everything. I buy random sketchbooks in hopes of actually drawing in every page & finishing a sketchbook. Of course, this never happens, to me lol.

However, this year, I went to my local art shop & got myself a small mixed media (15 sheets), black pages, sketchbook to complete this task.

Between this sketchbook & other sketchbooks, I was finally able to complete this goal of mine 😊

It was really fun to come back to this little sketchbook & just draw & color whatever I wanted without overthinking. I plan to keep this up, so I can avoid buying new sketchbooks. 😅

Choosing the right type of sketchbook can make a big difference. For instance, the 400 Series Strathmore Black Mixed Media sketchbook I used has 15 sheets with black vellum surface designed specifically for mixed media. The black pages offer a unique backdrop that inspires creativity in new ways compared to traditional white paper. Using black pages encourages artists to experiment with different mediums like gel pens, colored pencils, white ink, and watercolor paints that stand out vibrantly on dark backgrounds. This can help keep your interest alive and push you beyond your usual sketching style. Additionally, limiting the size to 15 sheets made the goal feel more achievable, rather than overwhelming. The key to finishing a sketchbook is often to stop overthinking and just draw whatever inspires you at the moment. Whether it’s things around you, scenes from your favorite Pixar movie like "Elemental", or abstract ideas, letting your intuition guide you can enhance the joy of creating. Keeping a sketchbook with mixed media paper and black pages is also practical. It helps avoid accumulating multiple unfinished books and encourages consistent creative practice. Eventually, this habit can improve your skills and build your personal style. For those who find themselves buying but not finishing many sketchbooks, consider finding a medium and style that excites you uniquely, just like using black mixed media paper helped me. Allow yourself to have fun, experiment, and don’t take your drawings too seriously. Finishing a sketchbook is not just about completing pages; it’s about enjoying the creative journey every step of the way.
