During my trip to Tokyo, I decided to try something genuinely unique and creative—a custom chopstick making class. It turned out to be one of the most rewarding hands-on experiences I’ve had while traveling. The workshop provided a wide variety of wood options, including some beautiful patterns like cheetah print, which added an extra touch of personality to the chopsticks. Shaving down the wood to the right shape required patience and effort—it was more physically demanding than I expected. After shaving, there was flexibility to customize the chopsticks further by sanding the edges either rounded or squared, depending on personal preference. Then came the icing on the cake: engraving. I chose to have both English and Kanji characters engraved, making my chopsticks a unique keepsake that reflects the culture. Finally, oiling the wood was an important step to protect the chopsticks and keep them clean from dust and residue. They were then beautifully packaged, ready to be taken home as a special memory from Japan.
