pdx car enthusiasts edition

Let’s dive into the Portland area’s lesser-known, under-the-radar gems for car enthusiasts who want an exclusive backdrop. These spots might take some hunting, but they’re well worth the drive and sure to deliver something different.

1. Northwest Reeder Road, Sauvie Island

If you’re into stretches of quiet road with unbeatable scenery, head out to Northwest Reeder Road on Sauvie Island. While Sauvie Island itself is popular, this specific road is a hidden stretch through lush fields and forested patches, giving off an almost rural escape vibe. Plus, the peaceful setting and minimal traffic mean you’ll have more freedom to snap shots without interruption. And when the fall colors come out, it’s next-level scenic.

2. Carver Bridge, Clackamas River

This old-school bridge near the town of Carver offers a rustic, industrial vibe against the backdrop of the Clackamas River. It’s a bit out of the way, so not many people know about it, but that’s part of its charm. Park up and you’ll get that gritty, weathered backdrop that’ll make any car photo feel like a movie still. And if anyone asks, just tell them you’re scouting for Fast and Furious: Oregon Drift.

3. Marmot Road, Sandy

Marmot Road in the Sandy area is an unassuming, winding rural road with a view of Mount Hood in the distance. It’s a narrow, tree-lined stretch with hardly any traffic, giving you the freedom to park, pose, and just enjoy the vibe. It feels worlds away from the city, and you’ll get that perfect mix of mountain views, forest canopy, and a bit of mystery as you drive along.

Each of these spots is as close to “secret” as it gets and perfect for car enthusiasts looking to add something fresh and unique to their lineup. Plus, you’re guaranteed to get a quieter, more personal experience—and shots that others will definitely want to know more about.

... Read moreOkay, so you've got the lowdown on some of Portland's coolest, under-the-radar spots for your car adventures. But finding the perfect 'car viewpoint' is just the first step! As someone who loves cruising these hidden roads and capturing my ride, I’ve picked up a few tips to really make your experience—and your photos—stand out. First off, let's talk about timing. For photography, nothing beats the 'golden hour' right after sunrise or an hour before sunset. The light is soft, warm, and just magical for highlighting your car's curves and paint job. Imagine your dark car with headlights on, parked on a winding road, bathed in that golden glow – pure perfection! During fall, like when those gorgeous autumn trees are bursting with orange and green leaves, these spots become even more breathtaking. Northwest Reeder Road, especially, turns into a fall wonderland. Planning your visit for these times will seriously elevate your shots. Next, preparation is key. Before you head out, give your car a good wash and detail. Even if you're going for a rugged, off-road vibe, a clean car always photographs better. Check your tire pressure and fluid levels, especially for those longer drives out to Sandy or Sauvie Island. Pack a small cooler with snacks and drinks – these spots are off the beaten path, so amenities are scarce. And don't forget your camera gear! A good DSLR or even a high-quality phone camera can do wonders. Consider bringing a tripod for stable shots, especially if you’re experimenting with slower shutter speeds to capture movement or light trails. When you arrive, scout your location. Even on a 'secret' road, there might be specific bends, trees, or backdrops that work better than others. For example, at Carver Bridge, think about how the rustic bridge railings can frame your car or how the Clackamas River adds depth to your background. At Marmot Road, try to find a spot where Mount Hood is clearly visible in the distance without being obscured by trees. Play with different angles – low shots can make your car look more imposing, while higher angles can capture more of the scenic surroundings. Don't be afraid to get down on the ground! Consider the story you want to tell. Are you going for a sleek, urban look, or a wild, adventurous feel? The natural elements at these locations are fantastic props. Use the winding road lines to lead the eye to your car. Position your vehicle so those vibrant autumn trees act as a natural frame. If you're on Northwest Reeder Road, the endless fields can give a sense of open-road freedom. If it's a bit overcast, that soft, diffused light can actually be amazing for car photography, reducing harsh shadows and bringing out color saturation. Finally, safety first. While these roads have minimal traffic, always be aware of your surroundings. Park safely off the main road, especially if you’re setting up for a photoshoot. Let someone know where you're going, especially if you're exploring solo. And remember to leave no trace – pack out anything you pack in. These hidden gems are precious, and we want to keep them beautiful for all car enthusiasts to enjoy. Happy driving and snapping, fellow PDX car lovers!
