Pop culture style! These can all be mix and match and can add or subtract characters as needed and will still fit the theme! These also include pet ideas as well if you take your pets along like we do.
Should I put together DIY versions of some of these costumes?
... Read moreWhen it comes to unforgettable Halloween costumes for the whole family, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are an absolute classic! I mean, who doesn't love Leonardo, Donatello, Michelangelo, and Raphael? It's a theme that brings back so much nostalgia for parents and introduces a whole new world of fun for kids.
I remember planning our TMNT family costumes, and the excitement was palpable. The beauty of this theme, as I learned, is how versatile it is! You can easily include everyone—adults, children, babies, and even your beloved pets. For the main four, green jumpsuits or t-shirts with colored eye masks are a great starting point. We opted for DIY shells made from cardboard spray-painted green and strapped on with elastic, which added such a personal touch. Each turtle's weapon – katanas for Leo, bo staff for Donnie, nunchaku for Mikey, and sai for Raph – can be safely crafted from lightweight materials or bought as toy versions.
But why stop at just the turtles? This theme offers so many possibilities for expanding your crew. You could have someone dress as their wise sensei, Splinter, perhaps with a brown robe and rat ears. April O'Neil, with her iconic yellow jumpsuit, is another fantastic option. Or, for those who love a bit of mischief, why not Shredder, Bebop, or Rocksteady? My friend even managed to put together an amazing Casey Jones costume with a hockey mask and stick for her older son, which was a huge hit!
And let's not forget our furry family members! Dressing up our dog was one of the highlights. We considered a tiny turtle shell for him, but ultimately went with a custom-made dog vest that looked like a pizza delivery uniform, complete with a miniature pizza toy in his mouth, just like the OCR description mentioned! He absolutely loved the attention, and it perfectly tied into the Turtles' love for pizza. For babies, a soft green onesie with a small, felt shell attached is adorable and comfortable. You can easily find or make tiny colored eye masks to differentiate between the baby turtles.
Making these costumes doesn't have to break the bank. You can find many basic pieces at thrift stores or use items you already own. Green fabric, felt for eye masks, and some craft supplies will go a long way for a DIY approach. The key is to have fun with it and let everyone choose their favorite character. The memories you'll make dressing up as this iconic team, ready to save the day (and eat some pizza!), will be truly priceless.
Shrek should be green!!!
