Aetherdrift preview card.

... Read moreOkay, so I just saw the Aetherdrift preview card and I couldn't be more hyped! This new Legendary Creature, King James from Queens, is a Goblin Artificer with an ability that sounds absolutely bonkers. Get ready for 'Start Your Engines!'—it literally says to 'Tape all creatures on Hotwheel TM cars' and then 'Exile all creatures that didn't come in first place.' Seriously, Wizard of the Coast is getting wild with these mechanics, and I'm here for it! This preview has completely captured my imagination. This 'first place' mechanic is what really intrigues me. It implies a mini-game or combat step where only one creature emerges victorious, and the rest get exiled. My immediate thought is, how do we ensure our creatures are always coming in 'first place'? We'll need to think about combat tricks, power buffs, or maybe even evasion. Imagine a deck built around making one creature unblockable or giving it double strike to dominate the race. It's a high-risk, high-reward strategy, but the flavor of a Goblin Artificer orchestrating a Hotwheel car race for creatures is just too good to pass up. The card art, featuring "King James, of Queens" and the dramatic "AND GENTLEMEN!!!" definitely sets the stage for a spectacular showdown. Speaking of Goblin Artificers and wild contraptions, my mind immediately jumps to Pia Nalaar, the Chief Mechanic. She's a staple in many artifact and vehicle-themed decks, known for generating Thopter tokens and making vehicles more efficient. Could King James and Pia Nalaar be the dynamic duo we never knew we needed in an Aetherdrift-inspired build? Pia can churn out artifacts, and her Thopters could potentially be participants in King James's 'Hotwheel TM cars' race. While Thopters might not seem like 'creatures' for taping, the synergy with her ability to crew vehicles and create artifacts could be crucial. If King James can exile non-winners, Pia's ability to create flying blockers or attackers could be crucial in ensuring that one of your creatures wins the 'first place' title, clearing the board of opponents' threats. Building a deck with both of them could create an incredibly aggressive, artifact-centric strategy that leverages both direct damage and board control through King James's unique exile ability. To truly master the 'first place' mechanic from this Aetherdrift card, players will need to consider cards that protect their chosen racer or enhance its combat prowess. Think about a card like [[Temur Battle Rage]] for trample and double strike, or [[Vines of Vastwood]] for protection and a power boost. Even a simple [[Giant Growth]] could turn a losing race into a winning one, ensuring your opponent's creatures don't come in 'first place' and thus get exiled. The potential for unexpected swings in board state is immense. This card, with its "BORIA PINDADO" flavor text, feels like it’s going to shake up the meta for artifact and vehicle players. I'm already brainstorming commander decks or even modern brews where Pia Nalaar and King James work together to dominate the battlefield with their quirky, yet powerful, artificer ingenuity. Getting to 'first place' has never felt so important, especially with the threat of exiling everything else!
