Plants of the Priestess

Long before modern wellness rituals, myrrh was burned in temples, used in sacred oils, and carried through ceremonies of grief, purification, protection, and transformation.

In ancient Egypt, myrrh was deeply connected to the underworld, spiritual initiation, embodiment, and the sacred process of death and rebirth. Its rich resinous scent was believed to cleanse spaces, protect the spirit, and support emotional and spiritual grounding.

This is part of my series: Plants of the Priestess — exploring ancient plant wisdom through ritual, embodiment, healing, and the modern nervous system. Ancient plant wisdom for the modern nervous system. #myrrh #herbs #ancientegypt #priestess #nervoussystemsupport

5/16 Edited to

... Read moreMy personal journey with myrrh has been both profound and healing. I first encountered this resin during a meditation retreat where it was burned as incense, its rich, resinous scent immediately grounding my scattered thoughts. Traditionally used in temple rituals and sacred ceremonies, myrrh's ability to support emotional stability and spiritual cleansing is truly remarkable. Incorporating myrrh into daily life can be surprisingly simple. For example, burning myrrh resin or using essential oil diffusers during evening routines creates a calming environment that encourages reflection and emotional release. When I faced periods of emotional grief, I found comfort in pairing myrrh with journaling and shadow work, using the resin to symbolize protection and transformation through difficult emotional processes. Moreover, the connection myrrh holds to death and rebirth offers a powerful metaphor for personal growth. Sitting with discomfort and acknowledging emotional aches becomes more manageable with myrrh’s supportive energy. Its grounding effect helps to calm the nervous system, aiding stillness and deep meditation. For those interested in spiritual initiation or ritual work, myrrh remains a potent ally. Used in purification ceremonies and to create sacred space, it invites a deeper embodiment of presence and healing. Whether diffused gently or applied in sacred oils, myrrh continues to bridge ancient wisdom with modern nervous system support, making it a timeless tool for healing and transformation.
