Fishjng Zoomies

Taking your dog fishing can be an incredibly rewarding experience, but it definitely comes with its own set of challenges, especially when you have a super energetic golden retriever puppy like my Murphy! He's just six months old, and his enthusiasm for everything is off the charts. We recently went on our first bass fishing trip together, and let me tell you, his 'fishing zoomies' were something to behold. One minute he was sniffing around the tackle box, the next he was doing laps around the boat, tail wagging like crazy! It was hilarious, but it also taught me a lot about planning for these adventures. If you're a pet owner thinking about bringing your furry companion along for a fishing trip, here are some of my go-to tips to make it enjoyable and safe for everyone, based on our experiences with Murphy: 1. Prioritize Safety First (Always!) This is non-negotiable. For a puppy like Murphy who loves water, a dog-specific life vest is a must. Even if your dog is a strong swimmer, accidents can happen, and a vest provides extra buoyancy and a handle for easy retrieval. Always keep your dog leashed, especially around the water and fishing gear. Hooks, lures, and sharp objects are everywhere, and a curious puppy can get into trouble in seconds. I always keep my tackle box securely latched and out of Murphy's reach. 2. Pack a Dedicated Dog Bag Just like you pack for yourself, pack for your dog! I bring plenty of fresh water and a portable bowl (hydration is key, especially on sunny days), their favorite treats for positive reinforcement, waste bags (leave no trace!), a towel for muddy paws or a wet coat, and a familiar toy to keep them occupied when the fishing gets slow. For Murphy, his squeaky duck is a lifesaver for redirecting his puppy energy. 3. Start with Short Trips and Familiar Locations Don't plan an all-day deep-sea fishing excursion for your dog's first outing. Start with a short trip to a local pond or calm lake. This allows your dog to get used to the environment, the sounds, and the motion without getting overwhelmed. We started with just an hour at a quiet spot, and slowly increased our time as Murphy got more comfortable. 4. Manage Their Energy (Especially Puppy Zoomies!) Puppies, especially golden retrievers, have boundless energy. Before we even get to our fishing spot, I make sure Murphy gets a good walk or a solid play session to burn off some initial steam. On the boat or by the shore, I designate a safe spot for him to lie down. When the zoomies hit, I try to redirect him with a chew toy or a quick game of fetch (if it's safe and doesn't disturb others). Patience is key; it's a learning process for them too. 5. Be Mindful of the Elements Dogs can get sunburned, especially on their noses and ears. Consider dog-safe sunscreen or ensure they have access to shade. Overheating is also a real risk. If it's too hot for you, it's definitely too hot for your dog. I always check the temperature of the ground or boat deck to make sure it's not too hot for Murphy's paws. 6. Positive Reinforcement Goes a Long Way Reward good behavior! When Murphy settles down, ignores the bait bucket, or stays by my side, he gets praise and a treat. This helps him associate fishing trips with positive experiences and makes him a better fishing buddy over time. He's slowly learning that sitting calmly means he might get a tiny piece of the fish we catch (after it's cleaned, of course!). Taking Murphy fishing has been an adventure, full of laughs and learning. It’s amazing to share one of my favorite hobbies with my best furry friend. With a little preparation and a lot of patience, you can create some fantastic memories with your dog on the water too!
