I recently embarked on an epic adventure, playing through BG3 as none other than Scanlan Shorthalt from Vox Machina, and let me tell you, it was an absolute blast! I opted for the College of Lore subclass, as it perfectly captures Scanlan's versatility, his ability to cut down foes with words, and his knack for being a master of many skills. The extra magical secrets at later levels really allowed me to pick up some crucial spells that felt right for a powerful yet cheeky bard. Key abilities like Vicious Mockery were my bread and butter for controlling enemies and adding flavor to combat. Cutting Words was invaluable for reducing incoming damage or debuffing enemies, making me feel like a true support maestro. Beyond combat, my high Charisma score meant that almost every dialogue option was an opportunity for hilarious persuasion, deception, or performance checks – staying true to Scanlan's charming and often outrageous personality. Who needs brute force when you have a lute and a silver tongue? One of the most challenging, yet exhilarating, parts of this playthrough was taking on formidable foes like Ketheric Thorm and Myrkul. You might think a bard would struggle against such powerful enemies, but with careful planning and smart spell usage, it was incredibly satisfying. For Ketheric, I focused on crowd control and keeping my party buffed, using spells like Hypnotic Pattern to manage his minions and Faerie Fire to give my damage dealers an edge. The key was to leverage Bardic Inspiration constantly and ensure my party members were always in the best position. Against Myrkul, the Lord of Bones, things got truly intense. This fight really pushed my Scanlan build to its limits, but it also showcased the bard's incredible utility. I found that having a strong Level 4 spell, like a well-placed Dimension Door for repositioning allies or Polymorph to temporarily neutralize a dangerous threat, was absolutely critical. I remember one specific moment where an 'Ide Lv.4' (perhaps a crucial buff or a powerful spell I'd picked up, or even a specific strategy I'd honed by level 4) turned the tide, allowing my party to focus their attacks and bring down the avatar. It felt epic, a true bardic triumph against overwhelming odds. If you're considering a similar run, my advice is to embrace the chaos, prioritize Charisma, and don't underestimate the power of support and crowd control.
