Beginner pottery tools! 🏺

What you need to start your pottery journey.

Good websites to source from are Bailey Pottery, Seattle Ceramics, Mudtools, Kemper, & Dirty Girls Pottery.

1/2 Edited to

... Read moreSo, you're ready to dive into the wonderful world of pottery at home? That's fantastic! When I first started, I felt a bit overwhelmed by all the different gadgets and gizmos. 'What basic tools do I need to start pottery at home?' was literally the first thing I typed into Google! Turns out, you don't need a massive studio setup to begin. A few key pieces can get you going, whether you're into hand-building or trying out a small-scale wheel. Let me share what became my go-to beginner pottery tools. First up, you absolutely need a good yellow sponge. Trust me, you'll be using this constantly! It's perfect for absorbing excess water while you're working, smoothing out surfaces, and just generally keeping your clay hydrated and workable. I usually have a few on hand – a larger one for general use and a smaller, softer one for delicate smoothing. Next, ribs are incredibly useful. I started with a basic wooden rib, which is great for shaping and compressing the clay, especially on the wheel. As I got more comfortable, I added metal ribs to my kit. These are thinner and stiffer, allowing for more precise shaping and removing excess clay more efficiently. They come in various shapes, so you can find ones that fit the contours you're trying to create. For trimming and carving, double-ended loop tools became my best friends. The different loop shapes on each end are fantastic for removing clay, refining forms, and creating crisp edges. You'll find yourself reaching for these often when you're defining the foot of a pot or hollowing out shapes. They make a huge difference in achieving a clean finish! And for those of us who work with larger blocks of clay or need to lift our creations off the wheel, a cutting wire with green handles is indispensable. It's simple but effective for slicing clay from a larger block or carefully separating your finished piece from the bat or work surface. Beyond these essentials that I personally found crucial, a few other items will really enhance your experience. A needle tool is surprisingly versatile – great for scoring surfaces before joining pieces, cutting small details, or even just checking the thickness of your pot. A fettling knife is another cutting tool that's handy for trimming uneven edges on slabs or coils. Don't forget a wooden modeling tool or two; these are fantastic for shaping, blending seams, and adding texture. When it comes to sourcing, the original article mentioned some excellent places like Bailey Pottery, Seattle Ceramics, Mudtools, Kemper, and Dirty Girls Pottery. These are reputable suppliers where you can find quality tools that will last. My advice? Start with a basic kit, then gradually add more specialized tools as you discover what techniques you enjoy most. You don't need to buy everything at once! Ultimately, having the right basic tools makes the learning process so much smoother and more enjoyable. They allow you to manipulate the clay effectively, transforming a lump of earth into something beautiful. Don't be afraid to experiment, and remember, every potter, even the pros, started with a simple set of tools and a lot of curiosity. Happy making!
