Even though it was only 70 degrees outside, I learned the hard way that heat stroke can affect dogs like pugs quickly due to their brachycephalic (flat-faced) anatomy, which makes it harder for them to regulate their body temperature. This tragedy taught me the importance of being extra cautious about my pet’s exposure to heat and humidity regardless of the weather seeming comfortable to humans. In my grieving process, I found that talking about my feelings openly helped me cope with the overwhelming sadness and loneliness. Sharing my story with other dog owners through forums and social media under hashtags like #pug and #riptomydog connected me with a community who understood my pain. It reminded me that while our beloved pets are gone, their memories and the lessons they leave behind remain valuable. For anyone with brachycephalic breeds like pugs, French bulldogs, or Boston terriers, I strongly recommend being vigilant during all weather conditions. Simple steps such as providing plenty of water, keeping your dog in shaded or air-conditioned areas, avoiding outdoor activity during the heat of the day, and always recognizing signs of overheating (excessive panting, drooling, lethargy) could save a life.
