My little garden

Starting a garden when you have limited space, like in a duplex, can feel a bit daunting, right? But trust me, it's totally achievable and so rewarding! I'm still on my own journey, but I've already learned so much about making a 'little garden' thrive, even if all you have is a balcony or a small patio. It's all about getting creative and embracing container gardening! One of the first things I realized is how important your containers are. While I'm loving my free grocery store buckets (score!), you can use so many other things – old laundry baskets (line them!), sturdy fabric grow bags, or even upcycled tires. Just make sure whatever you choose has drainage holes. If not, drill some! Root rot is a real buzzkill. Next up, soil! Don't just scoop dirt from your yard. Container plants need a good quality potting mix. It's lighter, drains better, and often has nutrients already mixed in. This is an area where a small investment really pays off for healthy plants. Now for the fun part: picking what to grow! For a 'little garden,' I've found that herbs like basil, mint, and cilantro are fantastic. They don't need huge spaces and you can harvest them regularly. Leafy greens like lettuce and and spinach are also super easy – you can often get multiple harvests from one plant! If you're dreaming of veggies, look for 'bush' varieties of tomatoes (like cherry tomatoes) or compact peppers. They’re bred to stay smaller and do great in pots. I'm excited to try some dwarf beans this year too! Sunlight is crucial, even for a compact setup. Observe your space throughout the day. Most edibles need at least 6 hours of direct sun. If you have less, focus on shade-tolerant greens or root vegetables. Watering is also key. Containers dry out faster than in-ground gardens, especially on hot days. Stick your finger an inch or two into the soil – if it feels dry, it's time to water. For anyone looking to start their own 'little garden' on a budget, keep an eye out for sales on seeds or starter plants. Many garden centers have clearance sections, and local community groups often share cuttings or extra seedlings. And truly, don't underestimate the power of free buckets! It's a learning process for sure, but there's nothing quite like harvesting something you've grown yourself, even if it's just a handful of basil for your pasta.
