Dead man's finger mushroom, an organic digester in nature.
Dead finger mushrooms, or antler mushrooms, have a slender shape like fingers or batons. This mushroom is a saprotrophic species found growing on decayed wood or plant carrion. Xylaria mushrooms are a genus of fungi found around the world.
The appearance is an upright stick, a long taper resembling a finger or baton, initially light yellow to brown, and as it gets older becomes black, especially the base part; the tip may be white in some species; the skin is rough and has small convex buttons, often found on carcasses of decayed wood both on the ground and underground.
Xylaria mushrooms serve an important function in the degradation of organic substances such as cellulose and lignin in wood, causing nutrient turnover in ecosystems; in general, mushrooms of the genus Xylaria are not popular for eating, as some may contain toxins (e.g. they may contain amatoxins) and look similar to some poisonous mushrooms.
