The black giant squirrel, Malayan giant squirrel, is a squirrel in the Ratufinae subfamily. It is the largest squirrel in the world and the largest squirrel found in Thailand.
Distinctive features are a long bushy tail, completely black body and tail feathers, some may have hips, or brown tail-out cones, yellow cheek and belly feathers, four inches of front feet, five inches of back feet, long and curved nails that help to hold onto trees, and convenient to move back and forth.
Mature size with body and head length 33-37.5 centimeters, tail length 42.5-46 centimeters, weight 1-1.6 kilograms

ในฐานะผู้ที่เคยได้มีโอกาสไปเยือนอุทยานแห่งชาติแก่งกรุง จังหวัดสุราษฎร์ธานี ผมรู้สึกประทับใจมากกับการเฝ้าดูพฤติกรรมของพญากระรอกดำซึ่งเป็นกระรอกขนาดใหญ่และมีสีสันที่โดดเด่น นอกเหนือจากลักษณะสีดำสนิทตามลำตัวและหางที่ยาวเป็นพวงแล้ว สีเหลืองที่บริเวณแก้มและท้องยังเพิ่มความโดดเด่นและน่าค้นหาอย่างมาก โดยเฉพาะอย่างยิ่งในปีนี้ที่ได้เห็นพญากระรอกดำพาคู่มาด้วย เสมือนการบอกเล่าเรื่องราวการสละโสดส่งท้ายปี ซึ่งสร้างบรรยากาศของความอบอุ่นและความน่ารักในธรรมชาติอย่างแท้จริง นอกจากความน่ารักที่เห็นได้ชัดแล้ว พญากระรอกดำยังมีความคล่องแคล่วในกิจกรรมปีนป่ายต้นไม้ใหญ่ ทั้งเล็บที่ยาวและโค้งช่วยให้พวกมันสามารถเคลื่อนไหวได้อย่างชำนาญที่ยอดไม้อย่างรวดเร็ว ซึ่งเป็นภาพที่ได้ชมแล้วตื่นตาตื่นใจมาก โดยเฉพาะอย่างยิ่งการได้เห็นพวกมันอยู่ท่ามกลางป่าเขียวขจี พร้อมกับภาพซูมใกล้ของขนสีดำและสีเหลืองที่ตัดกันอย่างชัดเจน ก็ทำให้เราเข้าใจถึงความงดงามและเอกลักษณ์ของสายพันธุ์นี้มากขึ้น เป็นประสบการณ์ที่อยากแนะนำให้ทุกคนได้มาสัมผัสด้วยตนเองค่ะ
