Researcher's version of the secret story...Knowing wild orchids by the National Park Innovation Research and Development Center, Surat Thani Province, is introduced to another wild orchid, Ania penangiana (Hook.f.) Summerh.
This orchid was explored at Napratnthara Beach National Park, Phi Phi Phi, 200 to 1,200 meters above sea level. It is a ground orchid, cracking, growing in warm to cold air.
The banana leaflet consists of several internodes, upright, conical to bobbin-shaped, leaves with petioles, lanceolate leaf plates narrow back to lanceolate, apex sharp to tapered, thin leaf plates, inflorescences formed from joints, with 5-17 flowers.
Fully blooming about 2.5 centimeters in size, most flowers are brownish green to yellow (sepals and petals have purple to brown lines, white to cream bill petals, often with purple spots, yellowish green ridges and brown spikes).
Pointed to tapered apical calyx, narrow lanceolate dorsal calyx, oblique to sickle-shaped lanceolate lateral calyx, oblique and narrow lanceolate corolla, pointed apex, oral lobe with 3 lobes, when spread flat, 2 times the width, with long spurs at the cones.
Slightly pointed apical rhombus central lobe, smooth and slightly wavy margin, round to blunt lateral lobe, mouth lobe adorned with 3 ridges, starting near the cone and ending at the middle of the lobe, all ridges straight or almost straight, complete
It is found in eastern Himalayan Assam, Bhutan, lower India, Malaysia, China, Vietnam and Taiwan, Thailand. It is found along evergreen forests, moist grassland forests and montane forests. Altitude 200 - 1,200 meters. Flowering period March - May.
