The leaves are spread flat on the surface of the water and held above the surface. The appearance is quite round. The tip and cone are concave. The leaves are soft on the top, dark green. The bottom is gray. The leaves are full large with a diameter of 50-60 cm. The leaf surface does not hold water. The petiole and pedicel are hard. The diameter is about 1-2 cm. The top is green. Turns almost brown when old. There are small spines all over the stem. The stem is fully long, nearly 2 meters long.
Oval flower buds, sharp slender tips, 4-6 cm diameter, 10-15 cm long, early period light green, but when fully aged before blooming begins, the outer petal color begins to soften to light pink, almost white, the tip of the pink petals becomes prominent.
The first day blooms like a vase, the second day spreads a semicircle, the third day spreads a full circle, 25-30 cm in diameter, with a mild fragrance, each flower blooms for about 4 days.

บัวหลวงพระราชินีเป็นพรรณไม้ที่มีความสำคัญทั้งในแง่ของความงดงามและคุณค่าทางอนุรักษ์ที่กรมอุทยานแห่งชาติ สัตว์ป่า และพันธุ์พืชได้ขับเคลื่อนการอนุรักษ์อย่างจริงจัง โดยในฐานะผู้ที่เคยมีโอกาสเยี่ยมชมศูนย์ศึกษาการพัฒนาพิกุลทอง จังหวัดนราธิวาส พบว่าการปลูกบัวหลวงพระราชินีในพื้นที่ต่างภูมิประเทศนั้นมีความท้าทาย ทั้งเรื่องสภาพดิน และสภาพน้ำสิ่งแวดล้อมที่ต้องปรับให้เหมาะสมกับการเจริญเติบโตของบัว ลักษณะเด่นของบัวหลวงพระราชินีที่โดดเด่นคือใบที่มีขนาดใหญ่มาก เส้นผ่านศูนย์กลางถึง 50-60 ซม. เหมาะกับการใช้เป็นสัญลักษณ์ความสง่างามของพรรณไม้พระนามาภิไธย ประกอบกับดอกบัวที่บานเต็มที่ได้ถึง 4 วัน ซึ่งมีสีสันและกลิ่นหอมอ่อนๆ ช่วยเพิ่มมูลค่าทางวัฒนธรรมของพรรณไม้ชนิดนี้ สำหรับผู้ที่สนใจปลูกบัวหลวงพระราชินี ควรศึกษาข้อมูลพื้นฐานอย่างละเอียด เช่น การดูแลเรื่องน้ำลึกพอสมควรและการให้แสงแดดที่เหมาะสม รวมถึงความปลอดภัยจากสัตว์ที่อาจทำลายก้านดอกและใบ ซึ่งหนามสั้นเล็กๆ บนก้านก็มีช่วยป้องกันบ้างในระดับหนึ่ง นอกจากนี้ การอนุรักษ์บัวหลวงพระราชินียังสะท้อนถึงจิตสำนึกและความรักธรรมชาติของสมเด็จพระนางเจ้าฯ พระบรมราชินีนาถ ที่ทรงแสดงตัวอย่างแห่งการอนุรักษ์พรรณไม้ไทยอันมีคุณค่าต่อระบบนิเวศและวัฒนธรรมของชาติ การสนับสนุนโครงการอนุรักษ์เช่นนี้จึงเป็นการส่งเสริมความรู้และความยั่งยืนของทรัพยากรธรรมชาติในประเทศไทยอย่างแท้จริง การเรียนรู้และเข้าใจรายละเอียดของบัวหลวงพระราชินีจึงเป็นประสบการณ์ที่มีคุณค่าทั้งในด้านวิชาการและความรู้สึกส่วนบุคคล ที่ช่วยสร้างแรงบันดาลใจให้ทุกคนเห็นความสำคัญของการรักษาธรรมชาติให้คงอยู่ต่อไปในอนาคต
