I totally get wanting to just live in oversized sweats when it's freezing outside, but I’ve found some amazing ways to stay chic and comfortable even on the coldest North Dakota days. My goal is always to look professional and put-together for my clients, while still being able to move freely and stay warm during long salon hours. One of my biggest takeaways for winter styling is that layering is your best friend. The salon temperature can fluctuate, or you might be running errands before or after work. Starting with a good base like a simple black long-sleeved top is always smart. Then, you can add warmth and personality. For instance, I love throwing on a cropped denim vest over a basic long-sleeve, or even a more delicate piece like a green long-sleeved lace top for a touch of elegance. These layers are easy to shed if you get warm under the salon lights. When it comes to dresses and skirts, don't pack them away just because it's winter! That floral print pinafore dress I wore is perfect for colder months when paired with dark tights and my trusty dark cowboy boots. It's such an easy way to look polished without sacrificing comfort. A long white tiered skirt can also be winterized beautifully with thick tights, boots, and a cozy knit sweater or even a light grey sweatshirt tucked in, perhaps cinched with a stylish brown belt to define the waist. Jeans are a classic for a reason, but I try to elevate them. Instead of just basic blue, I often reach for distressed blue jeans or even black flared pants for a slightly more fashion-forward look. They’re super comfortable for standing all day. On days when I want maximum comfort but still want to look intentional, I pair my favorite light grey sweatshirt (maybe one with a fun graphic, or a plain elevated one) with those black flared pants and some cute patterned slip-on shoes. It’s comfy but still looks like I put effort in. For outerwear that can double as part of your indoor look, a distressed denim jacket is fantastic over a black hooded sweatshirt. It adds an edgy vibe and extra warmth without being too bulky. Inside the salon, if I'm not doing something messy, I might keep a lighter jacket or vest on if I'm feeling chilly. And let's talk about shoes – they are crucial! Comfort is non-negotiable. My dark cowboy boots are surprisingly comfortable for long days and add a great touch to outfits. Patterned slip-on shoes are also a lifesaver for quick changes and easy wear. I always make sure my shoes are closed-toe for safety around salon chemicals and tools. Finally, don't underestimate the power of accessories. A stylish belt like a brown belt can transform an outfit. Scarves can add warmth and a pop of color, just make sure they won't get in your way. Remember, your style can totally reflect your personality while still being practical for your amazing job. Experiment with textures and layers, and you'll find your perfect winter hairstylist look!
