🤝Cross-Mekong Friendship _ Thai _ Laos
Although the Kingdom of Thailand and the Lao People's Democratic Republic had strong racial, linguistic and cultural ties since the days of the Ayutthaya Kingdom and the Million Elephant Kingdom, as well as having begun to establish formal diplomatic relations in 1950, the development of interstate relations did not run smoothly throughout the period, as it inevitably faced the effects of the global political context and the geopolitics of the region.
During the Cold War, Southeast Asia became an area of ideological competition. Political and administrative differences directly affected relations between the countries of the region, including Thailand and the Lao PDR. In particular, following the change of governance from the Kingdom of Laos to the Lao People's Democratic Republic in 1975, which led to the establishment of a socialist state that was clearly different from Thailand's approach, causing security effects and tensions along its borders at certain times, such as the conflict on the border of Ban Kao.
However, under challenging circumstances, the leaders of both countries expressed a political vision aimed at long-term mutual benefit, reaching a major turning point in 1988 when Thailand announced the policy of "turning the battlefield into a trading field." At the same time, the Lao PDR pursued an open country policy under the concept of "reimagining" to promote economic development and attract foreign investment.
The convergence of such policy lines is like a post-rain sky that helps to defuse political and security tensions, ushering in an era of revitalizing relations and building cooperation on different dimensions in a concrete way, from past conflicts to being neighboring countries that turn to economic, trade and development as the main mechanisms for linking common interests.
The turning point laid the cornerstone for Thai - Lao PDR relations, subsequently evolving into a strategic partnership and leading to cooperation on infrastructure, trade, investment and linking the Mekong basin region as is evident today.
