Throughout my hair growth journey from May 2023 to May 2026, focusing on consistent care and adopting healthy habits made all the difference for my 4A-4B hair type. One key practice I found invaluable was maintaining a low heat and low tension approach to protect my strands from damage, allowing natural growth to flourish without breakage. I made it a priority to get regular trims every 8 to 12 weeks, which might sound counterintuitive for growing hair longer, but trimming split ends helped retain the length I worked so hard to achieve. My wash routine changed with the seasons — washing weekly during summer to manage sweat and biweekly in fall and winter to maintain moisture. Using a sulfate-free clarifying shampoo ensured my scalp stayed clean without stripping natural oils, while protein treatments and deep conditioning masks kept my hair strong and hydrated. I also incorporated a peppermint and aloe scalp treatment alongside my oiling routine twice a week, particularly when my scalp felt dry. This helped create a healthy environment that promotes hair growth. Another habit that made a significant impact was wearing a bonnet every night. This simple step prevented friction and moisture loss, preserving my hair’s softness and reducing breakage. I also experimented with different moisturizing products, understanding that not all work for everyone. Finding the right combination of oils, creams, and serums tailored to my hair’s unique needs was essential. Through this experience, I learned patience is crucial. Hair growth naturally takes time, and staying consistent with self-care routines will yield results. For anyone with type 4A-4B hair aiming for length retention and improved health, I recommend embracing protective styling, regular gentle cleanses, proper moisturization, and weekly scalp care treatments. Customizing these steps to suit your hair’s response can transform your hair journey just like it did mine.
