Goniurosaurus hainanensis, Chinese Cave Geckos!!!
Species introduction into Cave Gecko Retreat!!! A “Predator Provisions Creation”…I completely miss pronounced their species name, it is NOT hainanese…it’s G. hainanensis #geckos #nature #terrarium #reptile #reptiles
It was absolutely thrilling to finally introduce my new Goniurosaurus hainanensis, the incredible Chinese Cave Geckos, to their custom-built retreat! After weeks of research and preparation, seeing them settle into their new home was such a rewarding moment. The original post briefly covered their arrival, but I wanted to dive deeper into what it takes to create a thriving environment for these fascinating reptiles. Setting up the perfect terrarium for my Chinese Cave Geckos (or 'CAVE GECKOS' as I sometimes excitedly call them, just like the OCR mentioned!) was my top priority. These geckos hail from humid, forested areas, often found in caves or rocky crevices. To mimic their natural habitat, I chose a substrate mix of coco fiber and sphagnum moss, which is excellent for holding humidity. I also added plenty of cork bark hides, artificial plants for cover, and smooth rocks. Providing multiple hiding spots is crucial for making them feel secure, as they are naturally nocturnal and prefer to retreat during the day. Humidity is absolutely key for Goniurosaurus hainanensis. I aim for a consistent humidity level between 70-80%. This means daily misting, sometimes twice a day, with dechlorinated water. A hygrometer is essential to monitor this accurately. I've also found that a shallow water dish, combined with the moist substrate, helps maintain the overall humidity. Temperatures should be kept moderate, ideally in the low to mid-70s Fahrenheit (around 22-24°C), with a slight drop at night. Unlike some other reptiles, these geckos don't require intense UVB lighting; in fact, they prefer dim lighting, often benefitting from a low-wattage LED for a day/night cycle rather than strong heat lamps. When it comes to their diet, Chinese Cave Geckos are insectivores. My geckos absolutely love crickets and dubia roaches, and I also offer mealworms occasionally as a treat. I always gut-load the insects with nutritious foods like fresh vegetables and fruit before feeding them to my geckos. It's also vital to dust their food with calcium and vitamin supplements a few times a week to ensure they're getting all the necessary nutrients for healthy growth and bone development. I usually feed them every other day, monitoring their appetite and body condition to adjust as needed. These geckos are generally quite docile, though they can be a bit shy, especially when first introduced to a new environment. They are not typically a 'handling' pet, as excessive handling can stress them. Instead, I enjoy observing their natural behaviors as they explore their terrarium at night. Their unique velvety skin and stunning eye coloration make them truly captivating to watch. While my geckos aren't the 'blue chinese cave gecko' morph that some enthusiasts search for, there are numerous beautiful color variations within the species, which is something I find fascinating! For anyone thinking about getting a Goniurosaurus hainanensis, my advice is to do thorough research. If you're in the UK and looking for a Chinese Cave Gecko for sale, always seek out reputable breeders or specialized reptile shops that prioritize animal welfare. Ask about their lineage and health history. Understanding their specific needs, from their natural habitat requirements to their humidity and diet, is paramount for their well-being. It's a commitment, but one that brings immense joy with these incredible, secretive geckos.
