FEEDING FIRE-BELLIED TOADLETS/FROGLETS 🪰🐸

Beyond just feeding, making sure your fire-bellied toads thrive means understanding their complete care! When I first got my little froglets, I was so focused on what to feed them, but quickly realized there's so much more to learn to keep them happy and healthy. While Hydei Fruit Flies are a fantastic staple for my toadlets, especially when they're small, it's good to offer variety as they grow. You can introduce other small insects like pinhead crickets, small mealworms (in moderation), and even tiny waxworms as occasional treats. Always 'gut-load' your feeder insects – this means feeding the insects nutritious foods before giving them to your toads, so your toads get those nutrients too! Don't forget calcium and vitamin D3 supplements. I dust my fruit flies with a good quality reptile calcium powder (without D3 for daily use, and with D3 a few times a week) to prevent metabolic bone disease. Creating the perfect home for your fire-bellied toad is just as important as their diet. These vibrant amphibians are semi-aquatic, meaning they need both land and water. For a pair of toadlets, a 10-gallon tank is a good start, but bigger is always better as they grow. I use a substrate of coco fiber or reptile-safe soil for the land area, making sure it's kept moist but not soggy. For the water, a shallow dish or a sloped section of the tank filled with dechlorinated water is perfect. They love to soak! Ensure the water is clean by performing regular spot cleans and full water changes. Hiding spots are a must – think small caves, plants (live or artificial), or even overturned coconut shells. These provide security and enrichment. Temperature-wise, they do well at room temperature, usually between 68-75°F (20-24°C). I don't typically need extra heating unless my house gets very cold. I also provide a low-wattage UVB light for a few hours a day, as it aids in vitamin D3 synthesis, even if they're getting some from their supplements. Regular cleaning of the enclosure is vital to prevent bacterial growth. I usually spot clean daily and do a full substrate change every few weeks. Handling should be kept to a minimum, as their skin is delicate and can absorb oils from our hands. When I do need to handle them, I make sure my hands are clean and moist. Watching my fire-bellied toadlets explore their habitat and eagerly snap up their fruit flies is truly rewarding. It's a journey of learning, but seeing them thrive makes it all worthwhile!
