Save This Before Your TEAS Exam Nervous System Review You Need Before Test Day

If you’re a pre-nursing student, this is designed to make your review faster and easier with concise, high-yield notes you can revisit anytime. Save this post so you can review it before your exam, share it with a study buddy who’s also preparing for the TEAS, and leave a comment with the topic you want covered next. Whether you’re studying anatomy, physiology, or general TEAS science, building a library of quick review sheets can make your prep more efficient.

7/2 Edited to

... Read moreAs someone who recently prepared for the TEAS exam, I found that mastering the nervous system concepts was much easier once I broke down the material into manageable sections. The division between the Central Nervous System (CNS) and Peripheral Nervous System (PNS) was particularly crucial. Understanding that the CNS includes the brain and spinal cord, while the PNS consists of cranial and spinal nerves, helped me keep these systems distinct in my mind. Focusing on the autonomic nervous system was another game-changer. Recognizing the differences between the sympathetic ('fight or flight') and parasympathetic ('rest and digest') divisions enabled me to understand how the body reacts under stress versus relaxation. Detailing responses like pupil dilation, heart rate changes, and digestion inhibition or stimulation helped solidify these concepts through physiological examples. When reviewing neurons, I made it a point to memorize the roles of dendrites, cell body, axon, myelin sheath, and synapse. Visualizing how signals travel—from resting potential to action potential phases like depolarization and repolarization—gave me a clearer picture of nerve impulse transmission. Differentiating sensory (afferent) neurons that carry signals toward the CNS and motor (efferent) neurons sending commands away from the CNS was critical for practical understanding. The brain's major regions—cerebrum, cerebellum, brainstem, and diencephalon—came together once I matched each to its key functions such as sensory processing, motor coordination, and vital autonomic control. I also paired sensory modalities to corresponding lobes, like the temporal lobe for auditory processing and the occipital lobe for visual processing, which made it easier to recall during the exam. Lastly, reinforcing these topics with diagrams and quick review sheets enhanced my retention. Sharing these notes with a study buddy was incredibly helpful, offering new perspectives and clarifying complex points. My advice: keep revisiting this review regularly before test day, and supplement your studies with practice questions that engage these nervous system principles in real scenarios. This approach made my TEAS exam success feel achievable and less overwhelming.
