Ever since I got a hold of Olipop out of randomness at target, these have been my go to drinks to have because there’s extremely low on sugar yet it still has a very sweet taste to it, which is a win-win for me.
Now strawberry vanilla will always be my cult favorite flavor, but wanted to try this one since I love anything with vanilla. I will say this one was not what I was expecting. It has a slightly after taste like of cherry medicine for children lol I guess because it has more of a cherry flavor than a vanilla, but I’m not too crazy about the flavor.
... Read moreOkay, so let's dive a little deeper into my Olipop Cherry Vanilla experience! You know how much I rave about Olipop for being that perfect sweet treat without all the guilt. Their low sugar content, often packed with prebiotics for gut health, and delicious flavors usually hit the spot, making them a staple in my fridge. My absolute go-to has always been Strawberry Vanilla – it’s just pure bliss in a can, a perfect balance of fruity sweetness and creamy vanilla. So, naturally, when I spotted the Cherry Vanilla, I thought, 'Vanilla? Cherry? This has to be a winner!'
But, oh boy, was I in for a surprise. From the first sip, it was clear this wasn't going to be a new favorite. The cherry flavor was definitely dominant, almost overpowering, which isn't necessarily a bad thing if you're a huge cherry fan. However, for me, the vanilla seemed to get lost in the mix, and what really threw me off was that distinct 'cherry medicine' aftertaste. It wasn't just a faint hint; it lingered a bit, making me feel like I was back to being a kid taking a spoonful of cough syrup. It wasn't unpleasant enough to make me stop drinking it entirely, but it certainly wasn't the refreshing, creamy vanilla-cherry blend I had envisioned.
I think the best way to describe it is that if you prefer a very bold, slightly tart cherry taste with just a whisper of vanilla, you might actually enjoy this. It's definitely not for those who are expecting a balanced, creamy vanilla presence. I tried it ice-cold, which usually helps mellow out stronger flavors, but that medicine-like note persisted. If you're someone who loves classic cherry sodas or even cherry-flavored hard candies, this might be right up your alley. Perhaps mixing it with a splash of plain sparkling water or even a little cream could help soften that edge and bring out more of the vanilla, but I haven't tried that yet!
For those of us who usually reach for the more subtle or creamy Olipop flavors, like the Strawberry Vanilla or even the Classic Grape, the Cherry Vanilla might be a bit of a departure. It's a reminder that even within a brand you love, not every flavor will be a perfect match for your palate. Part of the fun of Olipop, for me, is exploring all the unique options they offer, knowing I'm choosing a healthier soda alternative that supports my gut. While this particular flavor might not be my top pick, I still appreciate that it's a better-for-you option. It gets a 4/5 from me overall because it still delivers on the low-sugar, bubbly experience, and the core benefits of Olipop are still there. It won't be replacing my beloved Strawberry Vanilla anytime soon, but it's definitely an interesting one to try if you're curious about all the Olipop varieties and want to experience a truly distinctive cherry soda perspective. Just manage your expectations for that vanilla hint!
