I Drew A Still Life Using Only Dots (Stippling) 🖊️

This was my favorite art assignment last semester! We got to use ink and I decided to try stippling, which I’ve NEVER done before (or really even heard about). I wish I had a photo of it before I erased the sketch lines— i swear it was the most satisfying thing 🥲

Anyway, stippling is exactly what it looks like, a bunch of dots and only dots! The closer you make them, the darker that section looks (which is why it was really useful to have a value chart to reference).

Honestly it didn’t take super long, the sketching stage was the most tedious part because I wanted to include a lot of detail in the paint palette and paint tubes. It took a lot of focusing to outline all the small areas of different values, but the dotting process was lowkey therapeutic in a way.

... Read moreYou know, when I first heard of stippling, I wasn't really sure what it was all about. But after diving into that art assignment, I realized it's such a unique and mesmerizing way to create art! Basically, stippling is an art technique where you use tiny dots to create an image, building up tone and texture. The magic really happens when you vary the density of those dots – closer dots create darker areas, while more sparse dots give you lighter tones. It's truly fascinating how just a simple pen and countless dots can bring a still life or any drawing to life! For anyone thinking about trying stippling, I'd say go for it! You don't need much to start. I just used some fine-point pens – like those in the package I used for my still life. Having a variety of pen sizes, from super fine for delicate details to slightly thicker for filling in larger dark areas, can really make a difference. And don't forget good quality paper! Trust me, a smooth surface makes dotting so much more enjoyable. Looking at my *stippling artwork*, I can see how much the right tools contributed. One thing that was super helpful for me was understanding value. My art teacher always emphasized creating a value chart, and it was a game-changer! It's like a roadmap for your dots. You start with your lightest areas, perhaps just a few very spread-out dots, and gradually increase the dot density for mid-tones, going all the way to almost solid black for the darkest parts. This is where that 'numbered sketch' technique comes in handy – planning out your values beforehand makes the actual dotting process so much smoother. It's a delicate balance, but once you get the hang of it, you can create incredible depth and realism in your *still life drawing*. Before this assignment, I was more familiar with techniques like hatching or cross-hatching, where you use lines to create shading. Stippling is definitely different because it's all about individual dots. While hatching uses parallel lines and cross-hatching uses intersecting lines, stippling builds tone with pure texture. There's also scumbling, which involves tiny, circular scribbles. Each has its own charm, but stippling creates this unique, almost ethereal softness that lines can't quite achieve. It's less about the stroke and more about the presence (or absence) of a dot. When tackling a still life with stippling, patience is truly a virtue. I found outlining the objects first in a light pencil was crucial. Then, instead of just randomly dotting, try to think about the form of the object. For instance, the curve of a glass jar with brushes or the texture of paint tubes required different dot densities to make them look distinct. It's almost meditative, placing each dot and watching the image slowly emerge. Don't be afraid to take breaks; your eyes (and hand!) will thank you. And remember, it's okay to start small – a simple fruit or a single object is a great way to practice before moving onto a complex bodegones puntillismo scene. Honestly, beyond the artistic outcome, the most surprising part of my stippling journey was how calming it was. It's a fantastic way to unwind and focus. The repetitive motion of creating literally thousands of dots can be incredibly therapeutic. If you're looking for a new art challenge that's both rewarding and relaxing, I highly recommend giving stippling a try. Who knows, maybe you'll discover your next favorite art technique too!
