How I Draw Hands That Are Holding an Object

Using the object as a point of reference is just another way to get more accurate placements of the fingers and palm (you can use anything that’s in your reference photo and on your drawing).

So for example: when I map out the fingers on the top hand, how far does the pointer finger extend to? Of course I can “eyeball” it from the palm, but to get a more accurate sketch I look to see that the tip of the pointer finger is a little past 1/3 of the apple (mentally drawing out a horizontal line on the reference). I do that for each of the fingers and thumb, and for the top and bottom of the palm as well. It’s always a good idea to cross check each finger with the ones around it as well, to make sure everything is accurate while sketching! (it’s a lot easier to fix mistakes early on)

... Read moreDrawing hands has always been one of those artistic challenges, right? For the longest time, I found myself getting super frustrated trying to make them look natural, especially when they were holding something. It felt like no matter what I did, the fingers looked stiff, or the object seemed to float awkwardly in the hand. That’s when I really started leaning into the technique of using the object as my primary reference—it was a total game-changer for me, and I’m excited to share more insights beyond just the initial mapping! First off, let’s dive deeper into how the object acts as your guide. When I’m sketching, like those hands holding apples you see in my sketchbook, I don't just see the apple; I see how the apple pushes against and shapes the fingers and palm. It's not just about where the fingers end, but how they wrap around. Think of it like this: the object isn't just an accessory; it's an integral part of the hand's pose. Pay close attention to the negative space created by the hand and the object. Sometimes, seeing what's not there helps define what *is*. I often start by lightly sketching the object itself, getting its basic form and placement down. Then, I observe how my fingers (or my reference hand's fingers) curl around it, how the knuckles bulge or flatten, and where the palm makes contact. This helps with accurate finger placement and ensuring the hand looks like it's actually gripping something with weight and intention. Choosing the right reference objects for practice can also make a huge difference. While an apple is fantastic for understanding a basic grasp, don't limit yourself! Try drawing your hand holding a pencil or pen—this is a classic 'hand gripping reference' challenge that helps you understand delicate finger movements and the interaction with a slender object. Or grab a mug, a book, or even a crumpled piece of paper. Each object will force your hand into a different pose, teaching you about various grips and how the tendons and muscles react. I always try to pick objects that resonate with me or the story I'm trying to tell in my art. Don't be afraid to take your own reference photos! Hold the object yourself, look in a mirror, and really study the subtle nuances. One common pitfall I used to fall into was making all the fingers look identical or too evenly spaced. Real hands are so organic! When refining shapes, remember that each finger has its own unique curve and length. The pinky often curls in more, the thumb creates a prominent fleshy pad, and the middle finger usually extends the furthest. Cross-check these relationships as you go. For instance, if you're drawing a hand holding an apple, look at how the thumb presses against it, creating a slight indentation, and how the fingertips might gently touch or press into the surface. This attention to detail is what brings a drawing from a basic sketch to something lifelike. Another tip I picked up: don't be afraid to erase and redraw! My sketchbook is full of erased lines and corrections, especially when I'm tackling complex tasks like hand drawing. It’s part of the process of refining shapes. Sometimes I'll sketch the basic form, then realize a finger is too long or the palm isn't quite right, and I'll go back in to adjust. It's much easier to fix early mistakes than to try and salvage a fully rendered but inaccurate hand later on. The key is constant observation and comparison to your reference. So, next time you're faced with drawing hands holding something, remember these tips. Use the object as your anchor, experiment with different reference objects and grips, and don't be afraid to observe your own hand. With practice and keen observation, you’ll be drawing dynamic and realistic hands holding objects in no time!
