Part 13 - Kitchen Reno

2024/8/10 Edited to

... Read moreOkay, so you've landed here probably because you're also wrestling with a 1970s kitchen, right? Trust me, I get it! Our own kitchen renovation, which this article is a part of, has been quite the journey, specifically because we're transforming a truly 'vintage' 70s space. It’s not just about updating; it’s about navigating the quirks and charms (and sometimes headaches!) that come with a kitchen from that era. One of the biggest eye-openers for us was realizing just how much has changed in kitchen design. Those dark, sometimes clunky wooden cabinets, the often-limited counter space, and layouts that didn't quite make sense for modern living were all things we encountered. We also found that plumbing and electrical systems might need serious upgrades, which is something you definitely want to factor into your budget and timeline from the start. And let's not forget the color palettes – avocado green and harvest gold had their moment, but they might not be everyone’s cup of tea today! For our remodel, we debated whether to embrace the retro vibe or go full-modern. We decided on a blend, aiming to keep some of the original character while significantly improving functionality and aesthetics. If you're tackling your own 1970s kitchen remodel, think about what elements you love (maybe a unique window, or a cool architectural detail) and what absolutely has to go. Sometimes, simply painting those dated cabinets a fresh, light color can make a world of difference, especially if they're still structurally sound. Swapping out old laminate countertops for something more durable and stylish, like quartz or butcher block, can also instantly elevate the space. When it comes to materials, we found that selecting finishes that bridge the gap between vintage and contemporary was key. For example, rather than completely ripping out solid wood cabinets, we explored refacing some and painting others, choosing a color that felt fresh but still complemented the home's overall aesthetic. We also spent a lot of time researching flooring options. Many 70s kitchens had linoleum or dated tile. We opted for a durable, modern look that could withstand daily family life, but you might consider wood-look tile or even restoring original hardwood if it's there and in good condition. The backsplash also offers a fantastic opportunity for a statement piece – subway tiles are a classic for a reason, but don't be afraid to explore geometric patterns or even a subtle mosaic to echo some retro flair without being overtly vintage. Because we're doing a lot of this ourselves, we've picked up some great DIY tips. Don't underestimate the power of new hardware – changing out old pulls and knobs on cabinets is a quick, affordable fix. Lighting is another game-changer; 70s kitchens often lacked bright, layered lighting. Adding under-cabinet lights, recessed ceiling lights, or a statement pendant can dramatically brighten and modernize the feel. We painstakingly removed old wallpaper and prepped walls for a fresh coat of paint, which felt like a massive win! Another thing to consider is appliances – switching out old, bulky appliances for sleeker, energy-efficient models can free up space and save on utility bills. Beyond aesthetics, improving functionality was a top priority. Those 70s kitchens often had less efficient storage. We looked at creative ways to add pantry pull-outs, drawer organizers, and even a small kitchen island to maximize workspace and storage. If you're lucky enough to have space, opening up the kitchen to an adjacent dining or living area can utterly transform the flow, creating that open-concept feel many modern homeowners desire. This often involves careful planning with structural considerations, but the result can be truly breathtaking. When planning your own 1970s kitchen remodel, always, always, always budget for the unexpected. We found some surprises behind walls and under floors that needed addressing. Being prepared for these hidden issues will save you a lot of stress down the line. It's a huge project, but seeing our vision slowly come to life, transforming that very 70s space into something beautiful and functional for our family, has been incredibly rewarding. Good luck with your own reno adventure!
