Loc maintenance
I haven’t gotten two strand twist in over a year due to me being scared of shrinkage🤣any else feel me? No? Okay😭 #locsjourney
Okay, so let's talk about something I know many of us loc'd queens (and kings!) are really scared of: shrinkage! You know that moment when you wash your hair, and your beautiful locs seem to defy gravity, shrinking up like magic? Yeah, I've been there, and honestly, a big part of why I avoided two-strand twists for so long was exactly that fear. I thought, "What if they shrink up and never come back?" But after diving deeper into my #locsjourney, especially with my sisterlocks, I've learned a few things that might help you too. First off, let's understand why shrinkage happens. It's totally normal! Our hair, especially kinky and coily textures, has incredible elasticity. When it gets wet, it absorbs water, and those coils naturally spring back to their original, tighter pattern. This is a sign of healthy, moisturized hair, believe it or not! For sisterlocks, because they are typically smaller and have a tighter installation pattern, they might appear to shrink more dramatically than larger traditional locs. It’s not necessarily a bad thing, but it can definitely be frustrating when you're craving length. So, how do we navigate this shrinkage journey? Here are some tips I've picked up: Gentle Washing: When you wash your locs, try not to over-manipulate them. Focus on your scalp and let the suds run down the length. Excessive scrubbing or piling your hair on top of your head can encourage more tangling and thus, more shrinkage. I've found that washing in sections helps a lot. Smart Drying: Air drying is usually best, but it can take forever! If you use a hooded dryer, keep the heat on a low to medium setting. Avoid high heat directly on your locs, as this can lead to dryness over time. For speeding up drying without causing too much shrinkage, I sometimes gently squeeze out excess water with a microfibre towel. Moisturize, Don't Drench: Keep your locs moisturized, but don't drench them. Light oils and rosewater sprays work wonders. Over-saturating them can prolong drying time and contribute to that 'shrunken' look. Stretching Techniques: This is where my initial fear of two-strand twists came in! While two-strand twists (or braids) can cause initial shrinkage when wet, they can also be a great way to stretch your locs as they dry. Once fully dry, carefully unravel them, and you’ll often find some beautiful length and a lovely wavy pattern. Banding your locs with elastic bands (not too tight!) while they dry is another gentle way to stretch them out. Just make sure the bands aren’t pulling too much on your roots. Embrace the Poof: Honestly, sometimes you just have to embrace it! That 'shrunken' look often means your hair is well-hydrated and has amazing volume. It’s part of the beauty of locs. I used to be so focused on length, but now I appreciate the fullness and versatility that shrinkage offers. My personal journey with two-strand twists for loc maintenance has been a revelation. I was genuinely "scared" for so long because I saw others' hair seemingly shrink up, and I worried mine would stay that way permanently. But after trying it, I realized that while there's an initial pull-back, my locs eventually settle, and the twists actually help define them and protect them. It's not about fighting the shrinkage, but understanding and working with it. So, if you're like me and have been hesitant, maybe it's time to take the leap!
