It's so easy to get caught up in the hype around a new fragrance, or to fall in love with a bottle design and make a 'blind buy' – something I've definitely learned from, especially with scents like Zadig & Voltaire 'This is Her!'. Tips to Avoid Future Perfume Regrets: Always Sample First (and for a few days!): This is probably the most crucial tip. Instead of a quick spritz at the store, ask for a sample or buy a decant. Wear it for a full day, or even a few days, to see how it develops on your skin, how it reacts to your body chemistry, and if it gives you any headaches or a cloying feeling. That initial 'love at first sniff' can sometimes fade or turn into something you don't enjoy after a few hours. Test on Skin, Not Just a Card: Paper strips are great for a first impression, but a perfume truly comes alive (or dies) on your skin. Your unique body chemistry can drastically alter how a fragrance smells. Understand Your Notes & Preferences: Do you lean towards fresh, floral, gourmand, woody, or musky scents? Knowing your general preferences can narrow down your search. For instance, if sweet notes often lead to headaches for you, you might want to be extra cautious with intensely sweet gourmands. Read Diverse Reviews: While personal anecdotes like mine are helpful, try to read a variety of reviews. Look for common complaints or praises, and see if they align with your own experiences or concerns. What to Do With Perfumes You Regret Buying: So, you've got a bottle or two (or more!) that just didn't work out. What now? Don't let them gather dust! Re-evaluate in Different Seasons: Sometimes a perfume that feels too heavy in summer might be perfect for winter, or vice-versa. Give it another try when the weather changes. Layering: This can be a fun experiment! A scent that's too simple or too strong on its own might be beautiful when layered with a complementary, simpler fragrance or a scent-free moisturizer.
