My 2023 Standout Reads & Why
First off, I discovered fantasy this year (specially the MAAS Universe). My friends kept telling me I needed to read them. I put it off for a long time because the last fantasies I read were Twilight (which is probably more modern surrealism) and the first 4 Harry Potters. I assumed the world building would be too complicated for me to keep up with.
Luckily, ACOTAR eased all of those fears. To my surprise, it was easier to follow than I thought, but I still felt like it wasn’t dumbed down to make it easy to understand either. Maas’ writing is so beautifully descriptive and I truly see a movie in my head while reading her books. At the end of 2023 I finished TOG. I finished Crown of Midnight this month and plan to read Assassins Blade next per Maas’ preferred reading order she just released 👀
The next three books I fell in love with.
Read my first post on this account of East of Eden where I share my fave quotes!
Malibu Rising captured the confusing dynamic of family so well. Even though the situation is completely different than my own life, I was still able to relate to the main characters thoughts and emotions that she had towards her family. It gets you thinking about your DNA, nature vs nurture, etc.
ABOSBAS was soooo good in my opinion. Way better than the movie! The movie was beautifully depicted and 98% accurate to how I imagined it looking. I will say the books plot flows so much better than the pacing of the film, and I really recommend reading the book. In the movie you don’t get an accurate representation of Snow’s feelings towards the people around him. His inner thoughts change the perspective of the story, and you don’t hear them in the movie. I was lucky to be able to read and few chapters and then watch the movie up until the point I read to and compare so I got a really good idea of the differences between the two (my sister pirated it online 🫣)
Have you read any of these??

In 2023, I delved into unforgettable reads that not only entertained but shaped my understanding of family dynamics and fantasy storytelling. Sarah J. Maas' series, including ACOTAR and TOG, stood out for its immersive world-building and deep character explorations. The beautifully crafted prose made it easy to visualize the scenes as if they were movies. Another standout for me was 'Malibu Rising' by Taylor Jenkins Reid, which masterfully portrays family complexities that resonate universally. The narrative urges readers to reflect on personal connections and the interplay of genetics and upbringing, sparking introspection about our own familial identities. Additionally, I discovered 'A Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes' by Suzanne Collins, which offers a fresh perspective on familiar characters from The Hunger Games. The book excels in expressing inner thoughts that enhance our understanding of Snow's character far beyond the film adaptation. These readings have not only broadened my literary horizons but also encouraged deep reflections on relationships, identity, and the impact of storytelling. Each book provided a different lens through which to view life and literature, making 2023 a remarkable year for my reading journey.
