For my melanin-rich skin, I was so excited to pick out my band colors. Seriously, don't underestimate how much fun it can be to choose colors that pop against your skin tone! I've seen some amazing combinations, and it really makes the experience feel more 'you'. The actual process of getting them put on wasn't painful at all, just a bit lengthy. My orthodontist and their team were gentle, and before I knew it, I was walking out with a mouth full of metal! The first few days were definitely an adjustment. Eating soft foods became my new normal – think smoothies, soups, mashed potatoes, and pasta. My teeth felt a little sore and sensitive, but it was totally manageable with some over-the-counter pain relievers. Speaking of adjustment, my lips felt a bit weird at first, and talking felt a little different, but you get used to it surprisingly fast. One thing I really focused on was my oral hygiene. With braces, it's super important to keep everything clean to avoid white spots or other issues when they come off. I invested in a good electric toothbrush, interdental brushes, and a water flosser. It takes a bit more time, but trust me, it's worth it for that perfect smile at the end. For my hair and skincare routine, I actually found that having braces made me a bit more mindful. I make sure to tie my hair back securely during brushing and flossing so it doesn't get caught, and I'm extra careful with face masks around my mouth area. Overall, my experience with braces as a Black girl has been empowering. It's about investing in myself and my confidence.
