Let's Eat Birria Tacos!🌮
I just made some birria tacos, and it came out amazing!👏🏾 Here is how I did it!
Ingredients:
* Beef chuck roast
* ½ onion
* 1 tomato
* 5 guajillo chiles
* 3 ancho chiles
* Garlic
* Oregano
* Thyme
* Cumin
* Cinnamon
* Chili powder
* Salt & pepper
* Beef bouillon
* Oil
* Corn tortillas
* Cheese
* Cilantro & onion for topping
🌮 How I made it: 🌮
1. Prep the meat: Chop the beef into large chunks and season with oil, salt, and pepper. Sear the meat in a hot pot until browned on the outside.
2. Make the chile sauce: Remove the stems and seeds from the guajillo and ancho chiles. Add the chiles, ½ onion, and tomato to a pot with water and cook until everything has softened. Once softened, transfer the ingredients to a blender along with garlic and some of the water you used to cook the ingredients in. Blend until smooth.
3. Season the sauce: Add oregano, salt, pepper, thyme, cinnamon, cumin, chili powder, and beef bouillon. Blend everything again to get the flavors throughout the sauce.
4. Strain the sauce: Place a fine-mesh strainer over a bowl or pot and pour the blended chile mixture through it. Use a spoon or spatula to press the mixture through, leaving behind the chile skins, seeds, and excess pulp so your consommé can be smooth.
5. Combine: Pour the chile sauce over the seared beef. Make sure it's covering the meat. Add water/broth if needed.
6. Cook: Let the birria simmer until the meat is tender. I used my Crockpot and cooked it for about 5 hours.
7. Shred the beef: Remove the meat and shred it with a fork, leaving the consommé behind.
8. Make the tacos: Dip your corn tortillas into the birria consommé, then place them on a hot pan. Add the shredded beef and cheese, fold, and cook until crispy.
9. EAT: Add the cilantro , diced onion, and eat with a bowl consommé for dipping. 🌮🔥
A little substitution: I didn't have chiles de árbol, which are traditionally used to add extra heat, so I used a little chili powder 😬 ( It’s all I had ) instead. Despite that, It came out super great!🔥 #birria #foodideas #mexicanrecipes #emergingcreator
Birria tacos have become a favorite comfort food for many due to their rich flavors and satisfying texture. What makes homemade birria truly special is the depth of the chile sauce, which is crafted by carefully cooking dried guajillo and ancho chiles with tomatoes and onions, creating a vibrant base full of smoky and slightly sweet notes. It's key to remove the seeds and skins from the chiles when preparing the sauce to achieve a smooth consommé, which makes for a perfect dipping broth alongside the tacos. In my experience, using a crockpot or slow cooker simmers the beef chuck roast to tender perfection, allowing the meat to absorb the complex spices such as oregano, thyme, cinnamon, cumin, and chili powder. The searing step before slow cooking locks in the meat's juices, contributing to a thoroughly satisfying texture once shredded. When assembling the tacos, dipping the tortillas in the flavorful consommé before grilling them with shredded beef and cheese imparts extra flavor and crispiness that mimics traditional birria tacos served in Mexican street taquerias. Topping the tacos with fresh cilantro and diced onions adds a refreshing contrast to the rich meat and melted cheese. A handy tip is to substitute chiles de árbol with chili powder if you want to adjust the heat level or if some ingredients are unavailable – this customization still results in delicious and comforting tacos. This recipe encourages experimenting with spices and cooking methods to find your personal favorite version of birria tacos. Enjoying birria tacos with a warm bowl of consommé for dipping makes each bite juicy and flavorful, a wonderful way to share a memorable meal with family or friends. Preparing birria at home offers not only a taste of authentic Mexican cuisine but also an opportunity to create a festive and interactive dining experience.
