push don't pull

our doors to the bathroom and bedroom were those pocket type doors, so the cats never got to figure out regular doors till we moved to our new place, Ping got the hang of it the 1st week we've been here, that was back in July! Pong on the other hand... well this is his way of trying 😂

Our cats initially only encountered pocket doors, which slide open easily, making it natural for them to expect a certain way to access rooms. When we moved, the introduction of regular hinged doors that don’t slide meant they had to learn a new skill — pushing doors open rather than pulling or sliding. From my experience, cats respond to these changes in different ways and tempos. Ping, for example, quickly understood within the first week how to push open the new doors, demonstrating how adaptable and intelligent cats can be when faced with new challenges. However, Pong was a bit more creative and less conventional in his approach, providing us with quite a bit of amusement. Cats often show their personalities through how they interact with doors — whether they paw at the handle, push with their body, or try alternative methods. For other cat owners facing similar adjustments, patience is key. Giving your cat time and gently encouraging exploration without forcing them can lead to success. You can also try propping doors slightly open initially to help them get used to the new mechanism or using treats and praise when they manage a push. Observing how your cat experiments with different movements can be entertaining and rewarding. Additionally, understanding that not all cats will respond immediately and some may prefer to find alternate routes or wait for an opportunity helps reduce owner frustration. Ultimately, teaching cats to push doors rather than pull is just another example of their adaptability and the quirky ways they interact with their environment. Sharing these moments, including the funny 'fails' and creative attempts, can create great memories and strengthen the bond between you and your feline friend.
