Starting a small business/side hustle!

This weekend I took a big step and did what I called a sample sale where I let people try desserts i’m interested in selling to let me know what they’d think about them. I received great feedback ( even got my first order) and I think I’m ready to move forward and make a business page and website.. If anyone has any tips and tricks when it comes to treat making I’d love to hear them! I also make chocolate covered pretzels, oreos and strawberries but I didn’t make those this weekend because I feel the taste doesn’t vary from person to person idk 🤷🏽‍♀️. #treatmaker #smallbakerybusiness #newbusiness #entrepreneur #baking

... Read moreIt's absolutely fantastic to hear about your successful sample sale! That first positive feedback, especially getting an order, is such a powerful motivator when you’re starting a small dessert business. It truly validates all the hard work and passion you pour into your baking. Building on that momentum, here are some thoughts and tips I've gathered from my own journey and seeing others succeed in the handmade DIY small business space, especially with dessert ideas: 1. Refining Your Menu & Niche: You mentioned making delicious chocolate-covered pretzels, Oreos, and strawberries, and your sample sale included chocolate chip cookies, mini tres leches cakes, and cake pops. It’s great you’re experimenting! Consider which items resonated most. Do people rave about your 'brown butter chocolate chip cookies' or are the 'red velvet cookies' a bigger hit? Sometimes, having a signature item, like a unique 'salted caramel cookie' or a perfectly balanced 'strawberry cheesecake cookie', can set you apart. Don't be afraid to streamline your initial offerings to master them before expanding. 2. Setting Up Your Business Foundation: Once you're ready to move forward, think about the practical side. What will your business name be? Something catchy and sweet? For an online presence, a simple business page on platforms like Lemon8 or Instagram is a great start. When it comes to a website, you don't need anything fancy initially; a basic site showcasing your products, prices, and how to order is perfect. Remember to look into local regulations for home-based food businesses – health permits and food safety certifications are crucial to ensure your delicious treats are safe for everyone. 3. Mastering the Art of Treat Making (Tips you asked for!): Quality Ingredients: This is non-negotiable. High-quality butter, chocolate, and fresh fruit will elevate your 'snickerdoodles' or 'double chocolate chip cookies' from good to unforgettable. Consistency is Key: Use precise measurements and follow your recipes carefully. Your customers will expect the same amazing taste every time they order those 'mini tres leches cakes' or 'blue cookie monster cookies'. Packaging: Presentation matters! Individually wrapped items like your chocolate chip cookies with pink ribbons, or neatly packaged cake pops, not only look professional but also keep your treats fresh and hygienic. Consider branded labels. Storage & Shelf Life: Understand how long your various treats last and how they should be stored. This is vital for managing orders and ensuring customer satisfaction. For delicate items like some decorated cakes, clear instructions are very helpful. 4. Getting the Word Out (Marketing Your Sweet Creations): Visuals are Everything: Take stunning photos! Those trays of 'ORIGINAL COOKIE FLAVORS' or 'PREMIUM COOKIES' need to look as delicious as they taste. Good lighting and simple backdrops can make a huge difference. Social Media Engagement: Share your journey, behind-the-scenes glimpses, and customer testimonials. Run polls asking which new flavor to try next. Engage with your followers! Local Connections: Don't underestimate the power of local markets, craft fairs, or even partnering with local coffee shops. These can be great ways to get your 'chocolate chip cookies' and 'cake pops' into more hands. Referral Programs: Offer a small discount to customers who refer new clients. Word-of-mouth is golden in the food business. Starting a dessert side hustle is a rewarding adventure. There will be challenges, but each one is a learning opportunity. Keep experimenting, keep baking with love, and keep sharing your sweet creations with the world. You've made an amazing start!
