Kids involved in sports, like dance or soccer, not only burn a lot of calories but also need the right nutrients to build muscle and recover effectively. One nutrient that often gets overlooked but is vital for young athletes is thiamin, also known as vitamin B1. Thiamin helps convert food into energy and supports healthy muscle function. Foods like whole grains, nuts, and lean meats are excellent sources of thiamin that you can easily include in your child's diet. My experience shows that balancing carbohydrates, proteins, and healthy fats throughout the day keeps my child energized and satiated. For example, a snack like berries combined with cheese and avocado provides antioxidants, protein, and healthy fats—all supporting endurance and recovery. It's equally important to encourage a positive relationship with food, avoiding using meals as rewards or punishments. Letting kids choose their favorite healthy snacks empowers them and fosters mindful eating habits. Before activities, fueling with complex carbs like oatmeal or a banana gives sustained energy. Afterward, replenishing with protein and some carbs aids muscle repair—things like yogurt with fruit or a turkey sandwich work well. In summary, nourishing little athletes is about more than just feeding calories; it's about providing nutrient-rich foods that support growth, energy, and muscle recovery. Combining education about nutrients like thiamin with personal food preferences creates a sustainable and enjoyable nutrition routine for your young athlete.
