How do you comfort yourself when life feels heavy?
Ever since I quit my meds, I’ve been learning how to comfort myself again. It feels like starting over — re-learning how to handle emotions, anxiety, and bad days without that extra layer of calm. Some days I light a candle, journal, or play Overwatch to distract my mind. Other days I just cry it out and let my emotions happen.
The hardest part has been regulating everything raw. It’s a lot to deal with at once, but I know it’s worth it in the long run. I’ve been leaning on DBT skills, routines, and small grounding moments that remind me I can handle life again.
I’m not against meds at all — they help so many people — but for now, I want to see who I am without them. Healing without that safety net is scary… but it’s also kind of freeing.

Learning to comfort yourself without medication can feel like starting from scratch, but it's a powerful journey toward self-discovery and resilience. Many find that incorporating simple routines—like lighting a candle to create a calming atmosphere or journaling to process emotions—provides much-needed relief on difficult days. Sometimes, distraction helps; playing a favorite game like Overwatch can temporarily ease a racing mind, while other times, letting yourself cry freely can be a profound release. One key method that supports emotional regulation is Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) skills, which teach grounding and mindfulness techniques to stay present and manage overwhelming feelings. Grounding moments, such as focusing on the breath, feeling textures, or noticing sensory details in your environment, can remind you that you are capable of handling life's challenges. Healing without the safety net of medication is understandably intimidating but can also feel liberating. It encourages a deeper connection to your own emotional landscape and promotes natural coping mechanisms. Remember, this process isn't about rejecting medication for everyone—it’s about personal growth and understanding your unique needs. If you’re navigating this path, consider building a toolkit of self-comforting strategies that suits you—whether that’s music, creative outlets, physical activity, or reaching out to supportive communities online or offline. Embracing vulnerability and allowing yourself to feel without judgment is also essential for authentic healing. Ultimately, the journey to comforting yourself when life feels heavy is deeply personal but enriched by practices that bring calm, awareness, and hope. You are not alone, and finding your way without quick fixes can reveal a new strength within.
