Indoor fun Chicago

After an incredible visit to the Shedd Aquarium, where we spent hours mesmerized by everything from playful otters to majestic sharks (and yes, we totally tried to spot a real-life Dory among the coral reefs!), my family and I realized we were just scratching the surface of what Chicago's Museum Campus has to offer. It’s truly a treasure trove of educational fun, perfect for extending your day of adventure. Right next door to the Shedd Aquarium, you'll find the magnificent Field Museum. This natural history wonderland is a must-see, especially if you have a dinosaur enthusiast in your group. Sue, the most complete T-Rex skeleton ever found, is absolutely breathtaking in person. Beyond the dinosaurs, we loved exploring the Ancient Egypt exhibit with its real mummies and artifacts, and the Hall of Gems, sparkling with incredible minerals. It’s easy to spend another 3-4 hours here, so plan your time accordingly, or consider a separate visit if you want to dive deep into everything. I’d recommend checking their website for combo tickets with Shedd – sometimes you can save a bit! Just a short walk further along the lakefront, perched on an island, is the Adler Planetarium. Even if you're not a huge space buff, the views alone are worth the trip. From the Adler, you get one of the most iconic panoramic views of the Chicago skyline, stretching across Lake Michigan. Inside, the exhibits are incredibly engaging, taking you on journeys through the cosmos. We particularly enjoyed the sky shows in their domes, which felt like we were truly traveling through space. It’s a fantastic way to spark curiosity about the universe in both kids and adults. Plus, the walk along the lakefront between the museums is refreshing, offering great photo opportunities. Beyond these major institutions, the Museum Campus itself is a beautiful green space that shouldn't be overlooked. On a nice day, packing a picnic to enjoy on the lawn with the city skyline as your backdrop is a perfect, budget-friendly activity. There are often street performers, food trucks, and plenty of space for kids to run around and burn off some energy after being inside the museums. We loved just strolling along the pathways, taking in the fresh air and the stunning lake views. If you still have energy, or are looking for something to do on another day that's still relatively close, Grant Park and Millennium Park are within walking distance or a short bus/taxi ride. Millennium Park is home to the famous Cloud Gate sculpture (the "Bean"), Crown Fountain, and Lurie Garden – all iconic Chicago sights perfect for family photos. Grant Park, often called "Chicago's front yard," hosts Buckingham Fountain, which has spectacular water displays, especially in warmer months. Making a day out of the Shedd Aquarium and its neighbors means you get to experience a fantastic blend of marine life, natural history, and space exploration, all within a beautiful lakeside setting. Remember to wear comfortable shoes, bring snacks, and check the operating hours for each attraction. It’s truly an unforgettable family adventure right here in Chicago!
