It’s not just about what it looks like, but how it behaves and what it truly needs to thrive. So, how do you figure it out? It's actually quite simple to do a little 'hair type test' at home. First, wash your hair with a clarifying shampoo to remove any product buildup, then let it air dry completely without touching it or applying any products. Once it's dry, take a good look at your strands in a mirror. Does it lay flat? Does it have a gentle S-shape? Or is it tightly coiled? This observation is key to determining your natural hair texture. Generally, hair is categorized into four main types, with sub-categories for wavy, curly, and coily hair: Type 1: Straight Hair This hair type is naturally sleek, shiny, and tends to be resistant to curls. It usually has a hard time holding styles. It can range from fine and thin to thick and coarse, but the defining characteristic is its lack of curl. My straight-haired friends often tell me their biggest challenge is getting volume and avoiding oiliness at the roots, since natural oils can travel down the straight strand easily. Type 2: Wavy Hair Wavy hair falls somewhere between straight and curly, forming an 'S' shape. 2a: Features a loose, barely-there S-bend. It’s often fine and easy to straighten or curl. 2b: Has a more defined S-shape, but the roots are straighter. It can be a bit frizz-prone. They tend to be shiny and have a good bounce. 3b: Tighter, springier curls, about the size of a sharpie marker. Type 4: Coily Hair Often referred to as kinky hair, type 4 hair has very tight, small coils, sometimes in a zig-zag pattern. It's often very delicate and prone to shrinkage. 4a: Dense, S-shaped coils that are clearly visible. It experiences the most shrinkage and needs maximum moisture and gentle handling.
