How I found a career in clinical research 🧪

By Georgina Wong, Foundation Diploma in Life Sciences

As a Clinical Research Coordinator, my role is all about bridging science and patient care. I work closely with doctors, patients, and research teams to make sure clinical studies run smoothly — and ultimately help improve treatments and save lives.

My interest in life sciences actually started during COVID-19. Seeing how much science impacted global healthcare made me realise I wanted to be part of something bigger — something that makes a real difference.

My diploma played a huge role in shaping that journey. From hands-on lab sessions to learning techniques like PCR, it helped me understand how diseases are detected and made everything feel more real and relevant. It also gave me the confidence to move on to a Biomedical Science degree.

Being part of research that can improve patient care and shape future treatments gives my work real meaning. As the field evolves, staying open-minded has allowed me to grow into a role that brings together science, healthcare, and people.

It’s work I’m genuinely proud of — and find truly meaningful.

If you’re someone who’s curious about science and wants to make an impact in healthcare, this path might be worth exploring ✨

From my experience, one of the most valuable aspects is how it connects scientific theory directly to patient care. For example, learning laboratory techniques like PCR during my diploma gave me a real edge when understanding how diseases are detected. This foundation made my transition into a Biomedical Science degree smoother and more meaningful. Working in clinical research coordination means constantly collaborating with doctors, patients, and research teams to ensure clinical studies run efficiently and ethically. It’s remarkable to witness how the data collected can lead to advancements in healthcare treatments that ultimately save lives. The experience of being at the frontline of medical research during the COVID-19 pandemic highlighted for me how crucial science is in addressing global health crises. Staying open-minded and adaptable is essential in this evolving field. New technologies and methodologies are emerging rapidly, and keeping up to date can widen your role's impact. For instance, attending symposiums and specialized training allows coordinators to gain insights into the latest cardiovascular disease care or preventive methods, which can then influence ongoing studies and patient outcomes. If you’re considering a career path that blends life sciences with real-world healthcare impact, clinical research coordination offers a purposeful and dynamic opportunity. It is a role that not only requires scientific knowledge but also compassion and effective communication skills to work closely with diverse stakeholders. Ultimately, this path is about being part of something bigger—helping to transform healthcare and improve lives, one clinical study at a time. Keywords incorporated from OCR and article content: Clinical Research Coordinator, Foundation Diploma in Life Sciences, PCR, biomedical science degree, COVID-19 impact, patient care, healthcare research, disease detection, public healthcare sector.
