My Little Pony has always been a world of vibrant colors and friendship, but as a fan artist, I'm always drawn to exploring its deeper, sometimes darker, corners. That's why I find the concept of an 'MLP Infection AU' so compelling. It allows us to take beloved characters, like our speedy Rainbow Dash, and put a truly unique, unsettling spin on their familiar designs. When I first started conceptualizing my latest piece, I wanted to focus on Rainbow Dash's most iconic features. Everyone knows her for her incredible speed, her rainbow mane and tail, and of course, her signature cloud with a lightning bolt cutie mark. But what if that symbol of speed and power became twisted? What if an infection consumed her, turning her vibrant form into something truly terrifying? That's where the idea of skeletal, bloody legs and jagged, lightning-bolt-shaped bone wings came into play. Instead of her soft, feathery wings, I envisioned them as grotesque, bony structures, still retaining the iconic lightning bolt shape but now embodying decay and horror. The contrast between her usual cheerful demeanor and the distressed expression on her face in the infected version really drives home the tragedy of such a transformation. It’s about taking something innocent and beloved and showing how it could be corrupted, which I think is a powerful narrative in fanart. Creating fanart within an alternate universe (AU) setting, especially a darker one like an infection AU, is incredibly rewarding. It pushes me to think outside the box and challenge what we expect from these characters. For those of you who also enjoy exploring these darker themes or creating your own fanart, I encourage you to think about what makes a character iconic and then imagine how those very elements could be distorted or reimagined in a new context. For example, how would Twilight Sparkle's magic manifest in an infected state? Or Pinkie Pie's boundless energy? The beauty of the MLP fandom is its incredible creativity. Whether you're into cheerful, canon-compliant art or exploring darker, more experimental AUs, there's a place for every kind of expression.
