Thriftstores!

2025/11/22 Edited to

... Read moreOh, the thrill of walking into a thrift store, knowing a treasure trove of stories awaits! My recent haul with Mom, where we practically filled a cart for just a few dollars, really got me thinking about how to maximize those thrift store book hunts. If you're wondering what books to look for in thrift stores to score your own amazing deals, I've got some tips based on my own experiences. First off, don't underestimate the power of popular fiction. Many people donate entire series or bestsellers after reading them once. I often find newer releases or popular authors like Stephen King, Colleen Hoover, or even complete young adult series sitting pretty on the shelves. Look for titles that have been on the bestseller list recently; they're often there within a year or two! It's an incredible way to catch up on your reading list without paying full price. Classics and literary fiction are another goldmine. These books are timeless, and you can often find beautiful hardcovers or vintage editions that are no longer printed. I love the feeling of stumbling upon a well-preserved copy of a Jane Austen novel or a classic like '1984.' They make fantastic additions to any home library, and sometimes you can even find first editions or special prints if you're lucky enough to really dig through those packed bookshelves. For the practical reader, cookbooks are a must-check. People often update their collections, so you'll find everything from vintage community cookbooks to modern culinary guides. I've found brand-new looking cookbooks for specialty diets or international cuisine that would cost a fortune elsewhere. Always flip through them to make sure all pages are intact and there are no missing recipes! Don't forget the children's section if you have little ones or enjoy collecting picture books. These are often in great condition because kids grow out of them quickly, and they're perfect for building a home library for future generations. I've seen vibrant, award-winning picture books and sturdy board books ready for new adventures. My personal strategy? I always start with a quick scan of the main fiction sections, especially those tall, overflowing wooden and white shelves. Then, I move to non-fiction. Self-help books, history, and craft books can be incredibly useful. I once found a nearly new guide to gardening that saved me a ton of money. And here's a pro-tip: always check the condition! While a little wear is expected, avoid books with water damage, excessive highlighting, or missing pages. Look for books with tight bindings and clean pages. Sometimes, you'll spot a unique cover or a striking color, like a beautiful purple book, that just calls out to you – don't hesitate to pick it up and see if it's a hidden gem! The more you go, the better you get at spotting those truly special finds. Happy thrifting!
