The First Book Welcomes 2026 | An Image of Africa
This year, the goal is to read 📖 Physical Books a month. This is the first book of the year.
Actually, it's been pickled since last year. I have to return the book to the library. 🤣 I'll review it.
📚 An Image of Africa and The Trouble with Nigeria
✍️ Chinua Achebe.
Includes critical articles of famous Nigerian writers.
The first article is a harsh critique of Joseph Conrad's novel Heart of Darkness, how it is full of racism, glorifying white people using Africa as a backdrop, ignoring African humanity or civilization at all.
The second article is a return look at their own countries, how they have problems (bad leaders + corruption), and a call for people to solve domestic problems.
We haven't finished reading the second article yet, 😑 but it feels that his article takes a lot more energy to read than fiction, uses a bit of difficult language 🤯 (but is always very good at it), reads more and more, and is a point that is not difficult to understand.
This time I started to love the work of writers from the African side because last year I visited that area, which is different in each country, but there are many things similar to Thailand, especially the issue 🤭, which makes it difficult for us to read and relate.
This year to try to read the books of writers in other countries. 🫡 Which friends have a guide book to exchange ideas? 🤓

การอ่านหนังสือเชิงวิจารณ์อย่าง "An Image of Africa and The Trouble with Nigeria" ทำให้เราได้เห็นมุมมองใหม่ๆ ที่แตกต่างจากนิยายหรือหนังสือทั่วๆ ไป โดยเฉพาะบทวิจารณ์ที่รุนแรงแต่จริงใจต่อเรื่อง Heart of Darkness ที่มักถูกยกย่องในโลกวรรณกรรม แต่ Chinua Achebe กลับชี้ให้เห็นถึงการใช้ประเด็นเหยียดเชื้อชาติในงานเขียนนั้นอย่างชัดเจน ซึ่งสะท้อนปัญหาการมองแอฟริกาในฐานะภูมิศาสตร์ที่ถูกใช้เป็นฉากหลังโดยไม่สนใจวัฒนธรรมและมนุษยชาติของชาวแอฟริกาเลย ประเด็นนี้ทำให้เราเริ่มตั้งคำถามถึงมุมมองของสังคมเราต่อประเทศอื่นๆ และรู้สึกว่าแม้แต่ในโลกยุคปัจจุบัน ปัญหาเรื่องอคติและการมองต่างชาติโดยใช้เฟรมของตนเองก็ยังคงมีอยู่มาก การที่บทความที่สองได้เจาะลึกปัญหาภายในประเทศไนจีเรีย เช่น ผู้นำที่ไม่ดีและการทุจริต ชวนให้เราคิดถึงสถานการณ์บ้านเราและประเทศอื่นๆ ที่ต่างก็มีปัญหา ขณะอ่านรู้สึกได้เลยว่าภาษาที่ใช้เขียนนั้นหนักแน่น ช่วยให้เราได้ทบทวนและเข้าใจปัญหาอย่างลึกซึ้ง พร้อมกับกระตุ้นความคิดในเรื่องของการเปลี่ยนแปลงและการร่วมกันแก้ไข นอกจากนี้ การมีประสบการณ์เดินทางไปแอฟริกาก่อนหน้านี้ยิ่งช่วยทำให้เรารู้สึกเชื่อมโยงกับเนื้อหา เพราะบางปัญหาหรือวัฒนธรรมของที่นั่นมีลักษณะที่คล้ายกับของไทยมาก อย่างเรื่องของการบริหารประเทศและปัญหาสังคม ทุกอย่างทำให้การอ่านครั้งนี้กลายเป็นประสบการณ์ที่ไม่ใช่แค่เรียนรู้จากหนังสือแต่เหมือนได้พูดคุยกับโลกภายนอกอย่างลึกซึ้ง และเปิดมุมมองใหม่ๆ ที่น่าสนใจ สำหรับใครที่สนใจอ่านหนังสือภาษาอังกฤษเชิงวิจารณ์หรืออยากเข้าใจสังคมแอฟริกาที่ซับซ้อน แนะนำหนังสือเล่มนี้มากๆ และสำหรับปีนี้ก็จะลองขยายขอบเขตการอ่านไปยังงานเขียนจากประเทศอื่นๆ ด้วย ถ้าเพื่อนๆ มีหนังสือแนวนี้หรือแนวอื่นที่น่าสนใจ แนะนำและแลกเปลี่ยนความคิดเห็นกันได้นะครับ
