... Read moreAs a huge My Hero Academia fan, one of my absolute favorite things to do is create fan art, especially when it involves original characters (OCs)! There's something incredibly rewarding about imagining your own hero or villain stepping into the MHA universe and interacting with beloved characters like Hawks or Bakugo. It’s a fantastic way to explore new quirks, backstories, and designs within a world we already adore.
When I got the request from my sister to draw her own MHA original character, I jumped at the chance! The first step for anyone creating an OC is always the quirk. Her idea for an 'Ink Lock' quirk was so cool – the ability for her glowing blue tattoos to stick to surfaces or people and then stop time? Talk about powerful! Thinking about how that would look visually, especially the luminous quality of the tattoos, was a fun challenge. You want the quirk to be not just unique, but also visually striking and integrated into the character's design and combat style, much like how the pros in the anime wield their abilities.
Next came the character design itself. Beyond the quirk, what kind of hero or anti-hero would she be? My sister envisioned a dynamic character, so we thought about elements like a curved weapon to complement her agility and the aesthetic of her Ink Lock ability. Details like her costume, expression, and overall stance all contribute to making her feel like a genuine part of the My Hero Academia world. And of course, making sure she fit the distinctive anime art style of MHA was key for an authentic fan art piece.
Integrating her OC with canon characters like Hawks and Bakugo was the icing on the cake. These two are fan favorites for a reason – their distinct personalities and fighting styles offer so much to work with. For Hawks, I loved depicting him soaring under a full moon, capturing his effortless grace. And Bakugo, with his explosive power, is always a joy to draw with his signature blasts. Placing them all against a dramatic dark city skyline truly made the scene pop and enhanced the heroic (or maybe even slightly villainous!) atmosphere. It’s all about creating a narrative, even in a single image, that tells a story and makes viewers wonder what kind of epic encounter is unfolding.
For anyone looking to create their own My Hero Academia fan art, especially featuring an original character, my biggest advice is to just have fun with it! Don’t be afraid to experiment with quirk ideas, character designs, and dynamic poses. Whether you’re drawing an OC battling alongside All Might, teaming up with Deku, or even having a casual chat with Todoroki, the MHA universe is vast and welcoming to new ideas. Share your creations, get feedback, and keep honing your skills. It’s a fantastic community, and seeing your fan-made heroes come to life truly adds another layer of appreciation for the amazing world Kohei Horikoshi created.
